The boxing fans are crushed with the latest development, as they won’t be able to see Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury meeting on July 24. COVID-19 has disrupted the plans for yet another big sport event.
Fury has COVID-19
The sources from within the Brit’s training camp reported that the WBC champion tested positive for Coronavirus, as well as several other members of his team.
So far, all the infected persons, including Fury, are in good condition. However, the Gyspy King, as Fury calls himself, won’t be able to participate on July 24, the date when his fight with Wilder was set.
It is another part of the Wilder-Fury saga, that has been going on for a while. After beating Wilder in February 2020, Fury was about to meet with the American once more, but instead, after waiting for some time, decided to look for other options, which eventually saw him booking a fight with Anthony Joshua. That one would determine the undisputed champion of the heavyweight division.
Wilder reached out to the legal arbitrage, and eventually stopped Fury in his intention to have one of the most lucrative fights ever. Instead, the Brit was forced to arrange a fight with the Bronze Bomber, which he did.
At the moment, Fury is the WBC champion, stripping off Wilder from that honor some 16 months ago. It was a seventh-round TKO win for the Brit, who was more than dominant in that fight.
He not only defeated the rival, but tore his eardrum, scored two knockouts, and pretty much hurt his ego. Even though Wilder tried to justify his poor performance with some odd reasons, that didn’t work, as everyone saw his inferiority in that bout.
White to Step In?
Several big-time names suggested this morning that Dillian White might step in and face Wilder. The 33-year old is the mandatory challenger in the WBC version and the interim champion.
He would regain that status with a win over Alexander Povetkin late in March, once he KOd the veteran Russian, evening the scores with him, following a disastrous loss several months earlier.
White has 28 wins and two losses, one against Povetkin and the second to Anthony Johsua, and is considered one of the best boxers in the division.
For a long time, the Jamaican-born has been trying to get his shot at one of the elite heavyweights. This just might the moment when he actually does. In some informal contacts with the promoters, he declared himself ready to face Wilder, despite such a short notice. This is a once in a lifetime situation, and Whyte really isn’t in a position to set terms here.
This is just one of the options. The most probable one is to see the Wilder vs. Fury rescheduled for October 9. The venue should be the same, T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This particular date is the best possible in the current circumstances because of all the other big pay-per-view spectacles in boxing and the MMA world.
