The US men’s soccer team played 1-1 against Jamaica on the road, preserving solid chances for directly reaching the World Cup in Qatar.
Even though many hoped to see the US winning here, the Reggae Boyz turned out to be a tough nut to crack, especially with all the players from the English Premier League involved.
All the action regarding goals was seen in the first half of an hour, with young Timothy Weah drawing the first blood after just 11 minutes of play.
A few days ago, the young striker recorded an assist against Mexico, indicating that he is in good shape. Today’s hit against the Jamaicans confirms that claim, and his club, OSC Lilles, will have a huge boost in the attack once the youngster heads back to France.
The Reggae Boyz leveled the score in the 22nd minute when Michail Antonio launched a rocket from outside the box to smash the ball into the net. West Ham’s star provided arguably the best goal of the entire round, and at that point, it seemed as if the Americans might be in trouble.
Luckily for the guests, the result didn’t change even though Jamaica had some chances and initiative in the remaining part of the event. The best opportunity went wasted at the start of the second half, with Fulham’s striker Bobby Reid missing the entire goal from some five yards.
The US team is now second in the CONCACAF standings, with Canada taking over the first place following a victory over Mexico last night.
“We’re still in a good position,” U.S. captain Tyler Adams said. “It’s going to be super-important we continue to win our home games, get points on the road when we can.”
Still, many aren’t as confident as Adams, because the United States have two very tough road games until the end of the qualifiers, one in Mexico and the other in Canada.
The northern neighbors beat Mexico in the derby of the round, 2-1, keeping their unbeaten record. At the moment, the Canadians have four wins and losses each, with a 13-5 goal difference. They have the best attack and the best defense along with the USA in these qualifiers.
Milan Borjan saved the hosts in an icy Edmonton tonight. Red Star Belgrade’s goalkeeper stopped two major scoring chances for the Mexicans in the stoppage time. Three minutes after the regular 90, Borjan denied Jorge Sanchez and Sebastian Cordova’s shots, sealing the hosts’ victory.

Previously, Cyle Larin, Besiktas’ striker, was on target twice, lifting Canada to a two-goal advantage. Hector Herrera brought chills to the hosts’ fans with a goal in the 90th minute, but fantastic Borjan fought away the pressure of the guests, helping Canada reach the top spot in the standings.
John Herdman’s guys have fabulous chances to secure a direct berth in Qatar, which would be the first time for the Canadian national team to participate at one World Cup since 1986.
In other games of the night, Panama flipped the result against El Salvador, posting a 2-1 win following a comeback. The guests struck first, but Los Canaleros were able to erase the deficit and take three points. Panama is currently fourth in the standings with 14 points.
The same result was seen in San Jose, where Costa Rica defeated Honduras. The hero of the game was Gerson Torres, who netted a game-winner in the fifth minute of the stoppage time.
