Sean Strickland and Nassourdine Imavov highlight the first UFC event this year, UFC Night Night 217. The Tarzan jumped in this one because Kevin Gastelum had to withdraw due to an injury. That might be disappointing for the fans, but Strickland’s appearance guarantees one hell of a fight. He has to bounce back following a devastating loss to Alex Pereira, and this battle comes as the best possible chance. Imavov is on the rise, and wants to reach the middleweight elite and, possibly, one day, attack the title.
Preview
Nassourdine Imavov (12-3, -110) has three wins in a row and incredible potential. With only 27 years, this guy is already in talks as a massive prospect who could take over the division one day. The Russian has everything it takes to become a champ, which is all up to him now.
In five UFC appearances, Imavov posted four wins and one defeat. After beating Jordan Williams, he was defeated by Phil Hawes by a majority decision. That was a spark that motivated Imavov to work harder, and the progress was immediately noticeable. He posted wins over Ian Heinisch, Edmen Shabazyan and Joaquin Buckley.
Imavov’s biggest weapon inside the octagon is his ability to combine strikers and move lightly around the surface. Very versatile and creative punching skills are the first thing you notice, and the second is his footwork that allows him to stay untouched. Imamov’s ground knowledge is very good, and if the rival makes a mistake on the mat, be sure that the Russian will manage to capitalize on it.
Strickland (25-5, -110) lost back-to-back battles, the most recent to Jared Cannonier via split decision. We have to say that Tarzan looked better in that event, but the judges had a different opinion. For what is worth, the UFC recognized that and immediately offered him to be a part of another headliner, and Strickland is now one of few guys who had the honor to lead back-to-back UFC events.
Strickland had six straight wins before losing to Pereira in what turned out to be a title eliminator. Later on, the Brazilian won the title, and Tarzan had to settle for a consolation bout against Cannonier that didn’t go according to his plans.
One of the best boxers in the division, Strickland built his reputation battling in the stand-up, accepting an open brawl in the middle of the ring, and having tremendous cardio. As time goes by, Tarzan pushes the pace up, increasing the volume of punches, trying to be as aggressive as possible. His chin might be a bit vulnerable, and his grappling skills aren’t at the same level as his boxing.
Prediction
The odds here are leveled, with both guys having the same prospects of winning. Strickland is our pick due to his cardio and experience in certain situations. Even though Imavov might have a more versatile approach, Strickland remains our pick for the winner. He will be the first guy with a solid movement in the octagon across Imavov, who didn’t clash with such rivals until now.
Pick: Sean Strickland wins -110
