For many, the easiest group of the entire 2022/23 UEFA Champions League edition is Group D. We have here the UEFA Europa League champions, Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting CP, Tottenham and Marseille, meaning that we don’t have a single national champion in this assembly.
Eintracht Frankfurt
The Eagles won the Europa League title, but to be honest they aren’t looking as a team worthy of the UCL. We saw them losing 1-6 in the Bundesliga opener to Bayern, and apart from that their best player Filip Kostic left the team.
This is going to be a huge blow for the Eagles, who don’t have a player like the Serbian forward. There have been some additions, like Mario Gotze, Jens Hauge or Lucas Alario, but none of these guys is a star of Kostic or the UEFA Champions League caliber.
Sporting
The Portuguese powerhouse is one of the younger units in the UEFA Champions League with an average of 24.2 years. They have fantastic talent, and if the club could afford to keep this unit together for two or three years they would be one of the best crews in Europe.
Thre super-talents left, Matheus, Mendes and Palhinha for more than $100 million, and the team invested that wisely in new faces who are going to be excellent players someday. One of them is Pedro Porro who came from Man City, and keep an eye on this guy because of his incredible talent.
Tottenham
The Spurs are the top favorites to win the group. Antonio Conte has high plans for this unit, and he already stated that on a couple of occasions this summer. The Italian manager got the players he wanted during the transfer window, and he immediately started completing the puzzle. The results are obvious, Tottenham plays well, looking like the team that could even attack the EPL title.
Fast transition, excellent set pieces, and very, very rational and precise tactics are the main characteristics of this assembly, along with the fact that the core of the team plays together for quite some time, especially Son and Kane upfront.
Marseille
The former European champions plan to come back among the continental elite, and they have already begun forming a team that could not only challenge PSG in France but play an important role in the UEFA Champions League.
Alexis Sanchez, Veretout, Gendouzi, and Under, these guys came to town, and with the already present players, Marseille could create a nice foundation for the future here.
Prediction
Tottenham should win first place here, because Conte’s team has much better players than any other rival in the group. Marseille is a strong contender for the second place because of their very hostile home field and overall, we think at the moment the French unit has a stronger team than both Sporting and Eintracht. Regarding the fight for the third place, we would give the edge to Sporting, as Eintracht really looks bad overall, without a system, and let’s be honest an individual quality to compete at this level.
