“The UEFA Executive Committee will meet via videoconference next Thursday, April 23, for an update meeting to discuss the latest developments regarding the impact caused by the coronavirus outbreak on European football. This meeting will follow an information session for the General Secretaries of UEFA’s 55 member associations on Tuesday April 21. The meetings will look at developments across both domestic and European competitions,” wrote in the statement.
The Committee is also considering several options for resuming the UEFA’s two competitions. The two most likely scenarios are that if national championships come back in June, the UCL and UEL start parallel with them. The other is that if domestic competitions restart later, UEFA waits for its closures before resuming its activities.
We’ve heard many possible formats, such as one-game elimination, playing multiple games in one week, choosing a neutral venue to organize a tournament. In short, various speculations were and are filling the headlines of the media.
Regarding the Champions League and the Europa League finals, they were supposed to take place during late May. Europa League’s final game was planned for May 27 in Gdansk, Poland. In the moment of suspension of activities, teams concluded the first leg of the Round of 16. The biggest names involved in the chase for the trophy are Inter Milan, Manchester United, Sevilla, Roma.
Meanwhile, the Champions League was at the same stage, with the note that some pairs finished their contests, and some are yet to play the second leg. The schedule of the UCL is not the same as the Europa League because games are not held on the same day, but stretched over a few weeks.
Last year’s champions, Liverpool won’t be defending their title, as they suffered an elimination against Atletico Madrid, who beat them at Anfield after overtimes. The teams who advanced to the quarterfinals are Red Bull Leipzig, who eliminated Tottenham and Jose Mourinho, PSG, who defeated Borussia, and Atalanta, who was better than Valencia.
