Thomas Tuchel today officially became the new manager of the English Premier League powerhouse Chelsea.
“I cannot wait to meet my new team and compete in the most exciting league in football. I am grateful to be part of the Chelsea family,” Tuchel, 47, said.
He signed a deal that will keep him in London in the next 18 months, with an option for extending it for another year. Tuchel is expected to pull the team out of the crisis as soon as possible, and after that to win some trophies.
The 47-years old replaces the club legend Frank Lampard, to whom he has an enormous amount of respect.
“We all have the greatest respect for Frank Lampard’s work and the legacy he created at Chelsea,” added Tuchel.

After a year and a half, the Blues recently fired Lampard due to insufficient results even though the team spent more than 220 million British pounds. The board was not happy with the way things develop, even though Lampard reportedly had big support from the owner Roman Abramovich, and was allegedly safe for three years.
When nobody wanted to accept the role of the manager and lead Chelsea, Lampard was there, doing a marvelous job, developing several youngsters who became the Blues’ stake for the future. The team from Stamford Bridge was under the transfer suspension, and Lampard carefully picked the best prospects from the youth academy, and with such a young unit, managed to reach the Champions League spot.
After the most recent transfer window, the ambitions of the fans and the entire organization became much greater, and it seems that Lampard couldn’t fulfill the same. Following just one win in the last five matches, and poor performances against the direct rivals for the top places, he had to leave.
Tuchel now comes as a savior. He, too, experienced what it is like to be sacked less than two months ago, once the French champions, PSG, decided to release the German due to problems in the locker room between him and the leading stars of the team.
The Saints didn’t start the season as planned, but they quickly recovered, posting consecutive wins and being confident. Yet, his alleged disputes with Neymar, Mbappe, and the rest of the stars couldn’t be tolerated anymore. The board had to pick a side, and the German was the one who lost in this case.

Tuchel’s offensive-minded style of play perfectly fits Chelsea’s team, which has several players from Germany against whom the new manager played or even worked with. The American international, Christian Pulisic, was in Borussia Dortmund when Tuchel led the Millionaires, and they had solid cooperation, winning one DFB Pokal. The likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz are also very familiar to the new boss.
That was the only trophy won by Tuchel during his stint at Signal-Iduna Park. After that, he added seven more in Paris, among them two French titles. He was close to making the biggest success of his career this summer, when PSG played against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League finals, but German champs won that battle.
Tuchel will lead the Blues for the first time already this midweek, with Wolverhampton visiting Stamford Bridge.
