Quarterback play is the most important component to NFL betting, as teams with quality quarterbacks are usually easier to back than teams without them. But those quarterbacks often come with a price, as betting on elite quarterback talent will usually come with hefty spreads to contend with. That makes it so important to look for and find underrated talent at the quarterback position, to make sure that you get good value and good quarterback play at the same time.
A huge factor when finding underrated quarterback play for NFL betting is finding quarterbacks who are capable of gaining chunk yardage. Quarterbacks who can’t push the ball down the field are usually doomed to throwing underneath routes, which make them easier to defend than more vertically capable quarterbacks. Looking at a team’s yards per pass attempt numbers should do a good job of illustrating which quarterbacks may be flying under the radar in that regard.
Finding quarterbacks with a track record of performing well in any situation is another thing that can help unearth underrated signal callers. Looking at split statistics can illustrate which quarterbacks are worth betting on in different situations. And if you can find a situation that benefits a quarterback in a way that isn’t reflected in the betting line, you could have just found that underrated value you were looking for.
But perhaps the most important thing that a bettor needs to do when looking for underrated quarterback talent to bet on is adjust their expectations surrounding quarterback play. In this case, that means thinking critically on a week to week basis, rather than using preconceived notions to inform your betting decisions. Because in a week to week league like the NFL, you can’t afford to be a week behind or more in your analysis when placing bets.
Take CJ Beathard for example. He came into the league as a decent quarterback from Iowa, but had never really shown himself to be capable of moving the ball down the field. But after starting for much of the 2017 season with the San Francisco 49ers, Beathard has shown an improved ability to throw the ball down the field to make big plays. If you had no ability to recalibrate your expectations for quarterbacks, you’d be unable to give yourself the chance to take advantage of Beathard’s improvement and win bets that most of the public is too afraid to.
It is worth remembering that these adjustments in expectations aren’t a one-time thing or something that needs to be done every few weeks. They need to be done constantly, and done relative to the aforementioned situational football and how it will impact a player.
Really, finding undervalued quarterbacks is like finding underrated teams in the NFL. You need to be able to combine the objective data that exists for these players with the open-mindedness that brings about the ability to adjust expectations on a regular basis. No matter what your methods are for combining those elements, doing so can give you a great chance to win when NFL betting.
