South Carolina has made a big upset by defeating one of the favorites for winning the national championship, Georgia Bulldogs. The Gamecocks posted a sensational win at Athens after two overtimes and a lot of luck. In the end, it was 20-17 for the guests.
Just a few believed in this, especially after seeing the spread set by the bookies. The majority of them gave Bulldogs a 24,5 points advantage, but eventually, they couldn’t even reach a positive result, let alone cover the gap.
Georgia’s kicker Rodrigo Blankenship and their quarterback Jake Fromm are the main persons to blame for today’s defeat. Although the entire team of the home side played pretty bad, the two had the biggest influence on the final result.
From had four turnovers after having the opening five games without a single one. On the other side, Blankenship missed two field goals today, one of them in the second overtime, which eventually secured a win for the Gamecocks.
At first, it was Parker White who made a 23-yard field goal in the second OT, but the Bulldogs still had a chance to respond. In the closing moments of that sequence, Blankenship had an opportunity to tie the match, but his kicks went by the left post.
Previously, White had missed a 33-yarder in the first OT, and a 57-year attempt with 40 seconds to go until the end of the regular part of the match. However, his confidence was there to cover that up, and to create possibly the biggest sensation of the season so far.
“I had confidence that I was going to get to go out there and have a chance to win the game for us in the next overtime,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fromm was below every decent standard today. The Bulldogs’ QB had a fumble and three interceptions, all of them by Israel Mukuamu, who even managed to return one of them for a 53-yard touchdown. He threw 295 yards, 28 of 51, and one TD, struggling to find his usual rhythm.
Gamecocks’ defenders were pressuring him all the time, which eventually provided results. Mukuamu was perfect, and this performance will no doubt turn the spotlight towards this guy.
“It felt great,” he said after the match, “a lot of people doubted in us this year.”
South Carolina’s quarterback Ryan Hilinski had to leave the game due to a knee injury, and up until that point, he had one touchdown pass, 116 yards thrown, and 15 completions in 20 tires. For this college, victory against the Bulldogs was the first one against and AP Top 25 team in the previous 5 years.
Gamecocks’ head coach Will Muschamp was thrilled with this success, especially since he has ties with Georgia.
“I’m happy for our guys, it was a heck of a game,” he stated during the on-court interview. “It is a hell of a day to be a Gamecock.”
On the other side, it is an awful day to be one of the Bulldogs. This defeat will push them down the AP pool rankings, that is for sure. But what is even worse for this crew, is the fact that they might face some pressure or lack of confidence, and that primarily goes for Fromm. He is known as a guy who rarely makes mistakes, but today’s contest showed everyone that he too has meltdowns.
The lucky thing for this crew is that the next game is also at home. The opponent will be Kentucky, one of the division rivals.
Gamecocks would like to continue in the same manner, as they have a state derby coming up next week against No.7 Florida.
