Sevilla showed why many say that they own the Europa League. The Spanish team beat Inter Milan, capturing its 6th title in this competition, breaking their previous record. The result of this exciting and interesting finals was 3-2 for the Rojoblancos.
They have a 100% efficiency in the finals, winning in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, prior to this. Inter stayed at their three trophies from 1991, 1994, and 1998, losing their second title-match, the first being in 1997.
“This squad are great. They believe in it, what they work on, and what they transmit. Even if we hadn’t won, I’d still love these guys, but today we take home the prize. We always believed. This team never gives up, as our anthem says,” said Sevilla’s coach Julen Lopetegui who is the most deserved for this outcome.

The former Spanish national team leader and Real Madrid’s head coach, who has been under heavy criticism because of his past, finally got the redemption he wanted, and a reason to shut down all his critics.
Yet the way the game started, it seemed that they might be the ones who had the last laugh. Diego Carlos brought down Romelu Lukaku in the box, and the referee pointed towards the penalty spot. Lukaku didn’t miss a chance to score in his 11th straight EL match. Eventually, the Belgian would become a tragic figure in this match.
On the other side, the hero was Luuk De Jong, who scored the next two goals in the span of 20 minutes. Both of them were after headers, where De Jong outsmarted the entire back line of Nerazzurri.
“It’s incredible. We had such tough games all tournament, but we’ve played so well as a team. We’ve been like a family, it didn’t matter who came on, we’ve worked for each other. Two headers are amazing for me.”
Still, the players left on a break seeing another goal, only this time in Sevilla’s net. Veteran Diego Godin leveled it 180 seconds following De Jong’s second hit.
The second half was marked with Lukaku’s mistakes. He would first miss a golden opportunity to score on a break, when he hit the goalkeeper instead of the net. In the 74th minute, Carlos wanted to net with a bicycle kick, and his overhead shot struck Lukaku’s booth, entering the goal.

After this situation, Lukaku became the only player in the history of the EL or UCL finals to score a goal and an own goal in one match. After 34 goals this season, the last one would make a difference in a negative way for his team. Previously, Lukaku reached the old Ronaldo with the number of scores in his rookie season at Meazza.
“I think Sevilla were more tired than us in the final part of the game but they had this chance, the ball was deflected by Romelu’s foot and went in. It happens,” Handanovic explained.
This is a very frustrating season for the Italian powerhouse, who was left without a single trophy, even though they entered this campaign with high hopes. Antonio Conte and the board have some open disputes, which will make the future few weeks pretty interesting. According to some sources, the Italian coach, might leave Milan, which would be a massive setback for the team who adjusted to his demands, creating perfect chemistry in the locker room.
