The Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks have executed a trade that lands the former NFL MVP, Russell Wilson, at Mile High. This is a tectonic change, that will reshape the entire league and make Broncos an immediate title contender.
According to pretty much all the analysts, this might be one of the biggest trades in the history of the league. Apart from Wilson, the Broncos got a fourth-round pick, and in exchange, they sent QB Drew Lock, TE Noah Fant, DL Shelby Harris, two first and second-round picks, and one fifth-round pick.
With Wilson in the starting lineup, the Broncos will become one of the biggest title contenders and arguably the toughest team in the AFC West, which is now by far the best division in the entire league. Apart from Wilson and the Broncos, we have Mahomes and the Chiefs, Herbert and the Chargers and Carr and the Raiders.
Denver was wandering around over the past few seasons, changing 11 starting quarterbacks since 2016 and Payton Manning’s departure. Even though they always had solid defense and respectable receiving core, the franchise from Colorado was never a serious contender.
With Russ, things are different. The former NFL MVP was elected for the Pro Bowl nine times has two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl title. He was selected as the 75th overall pick and a third-rounder at the 2012 NFL draft. In his sophomore year, Wilson led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl title, and managed to reach the SB on the next season but fell short of reaching back-to-back titles due to the famous interception at the goal-line that sealed New England’s victory.
In 158 games played, he has 292 TDs, 37,059 passing yards, 4,689 rushing yards and 23 rushing scores, one of the best dual-threat QBs in history. Though, over the years, the Seahawks’ OL hasn’t been protecting him well, but even so, Wilson remained one of the most reliable quarterbacks, despite suffering too many sacks. For the first time in his career, he had to miss a game during the season, ruining his iron streak.
Wilson will have a decent receiving corps in Denver with Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy as his primary targets, two of the most talented WRs in the league. We can expect some other top players to arrive in Colorado after tonight’s trade, all due to a chance to win the title.
As for the Seahawks, the new era starts for them already tomorrow. They will have to make several more tough moves, and maybe a couple of more trades in order to create a solid foundation for the future. They will probably go after a QB at this draft, meaning that at least a year or two of rebuilding is ahead of them.
Pete Carroll will have a lot of assets at his disposal, and we’ll see how he uses them. Lock proved that he doesn’t have what it takes to lead a franchise, and it is interesting to see whether Carroll immediately wants to get rid of him or still wants to take his time and do the entire process slowly.
