Robert Helenius is determined to defeat Anthony Joshua and strip the Brit of his heavyweight championship belts. The Swedish fighter declared himself ready to take a step forward in his career and attacking the best in the division. Helenius might also face Tyson Fury on his way to the top, and like with Joshua, he doesn’t have any doubts in his abilities.
“It’s difficult to rank Fury and Joshua. I rank myself as No 1, so they can fight as No 2,” he said. ‘It’s difficult to rank [Fury and Joshua]. I rank myself as No 1, so they can fight as No 2,’ he said.
The Swed demolished the unbeaten Adam Kownacki on March 7 in New York, in a match which presented a ticket for the title eliminator. In fact, according to himself, the win over the Polish rival was supposed to bring him the opportunity fight for the WBA belt, currently held by Tyson Fury, who won it after outclassing Deontay Wilder recently.
Still, his fight with the Gypsy King is on hold because of the trilogy between him and Wilder, which was supposed to take place during this summer. The recent Coronavirus outbreak ruined everything, and for the moment, it is on hold until the situation with the pandemic improves.
In the meantime, Helenius is searching for different challenges and believes that he might reach Joshua first. AJ is facing Kubrat Pulev on June 20 at Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium in London, and after that, has no particular opponent in his sight. If Joshua defends his titles, against the IBF mandatory challenger, The Nordic Nightmare believes he should get the opportunity of meeting him.
“I think it would be a very interesting fight,” Helenius said about the potential clash with Joshua, “I would like that very much. It would be fireworks and tactics, of course, but I think it would be a very, very interesting fight for me.”
The 36-year old has had a lot of troubles in the recent couple of years. His shoulder injury was troubling him a lot, and had to undergo an operation. In the meantime, he had problems with his lungs and was away from the ring for quite some time. But all after all this end, Helenius was back on track and more than happy to face new challenges.

Throughout his career, he’s been sparring with all of the top heavyweights, among them Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Deontay Wilder. According to his words, that is one of the reasons why he believes he might beat any of them and take the belt.
“I’ve been there in a sparring camp with him (Joshua). I have nothing personal against him; he’s a very good guy. I think very highly of him, and I like him a lot, but I think I would beat him.”
He feels the same way about Tyson Fury. The way some of the boxing experts see it, it is possible that Helenius first meets Luis Ortiz and Andy Ruiz Jr., before having a chance to fight for the belt. The situation with COVID interrupted all the plans and schedules.
For sure, this is the last, and probably the only opportunity for the Swed to make a noticeable result in his career. So far, his biggest success was being the European heavyweight champion. Helenius has wins over Dereck Chisora, Lamon Brewster, Siarhei Liankovich, and Samuel Peter.
