Real Madrid defeated Villarreal with 2-1 today, securing the La Liga trophy. It is the 34th national title for the team from the capital of Spain, and this one came pretty unexpectedly.
Who knows what would be the outcome of the championship if COVID-19 pause didn’t happen. During the period shortly before the suspension of all the activities, Los Blancos weren’t that convincing, and Barcelona created a small advantage, which they took on the break.
However, once the restart of the campaign took place, we saw Real’s fury, inspired by fantastic Karim Benzema, whose current form could only be described as unreal. The French striker scored goals in each and every moment when Los Blancos faced a problem or some unexpected situation. Benzema added two goals in today’s match, being the best man on the pitch.
The first goal was in the 29th minute, and the second in the 76th from the penalty. Overall, Real was better in this match, and the chances of the guests were minimal.
After the match, Zinedine Zidane was shining from happiness. Once again, he proved to be Real’s best possible choice at the head coach position. This was his second trophy this season, and the first title for both him and Real since 2017.
“It’s a tremendous feeling because what the players have done is impressive,” Zidane said after the final whistle.”I have no words for how I’m feeling.”The Champions League is the Champions League, but this league title makes me happier because LaLiga is amazing.”
Just a few expected to see Real winning the national championship, but that eventually happened. Zidane’s adjustments brought improvement on the pitch, confidence, and positive results. Instead of using an offensive approach like in his first stint at Bernabeu, he was focused more on defense in this one.
The pivotal piece in that aspect of the game was Thibaut Courtois, whose saves this season saved a lot of points for the Madridians.
“Coming back from lockdown, after two hectic months, winning 10 games… I had confidence in my team that we could win,” Courtois said.

Vincent Iborra scored one goal for the guests six minutes after Real took a 2-0 lead, but there was no time for adding another one. Even if that one happened, it wouldn’t change anything, because Barcelona lost at home to Osasuna.
Blaugrana was defeated 1-2, with the entire team being heavily frustrated following the event. And how couldn’t they be, when Setien’s boys held everything in their hands, and were the masters of their own destiny. In the end, they fell apart, leaving chaos among them.
The evidence of Barca’s internal problems is Messi’s suspension of the negotiation regarding the new contract. The Argentinian allegedly didn’t hide his unhappiness with the latest developments and the results.
About Real, Zidane has a chance to make this season even better. Los Blancos are in a tough position in the Champions League, but they still have some opportunities to reach the quarterfinals. After losing at home to Manchester City with 1-2, they have a rematch. It will take place in England, but Sky-Blues don’t have the fans behind them and it is questionable what is their current form.
Guardiola’s side is posting victories, but also had several slips which weren’t expected at all. It opens up a possibility for a big surprise, and the continuation of the UCL quest.
