Philadelphia Eagles defeated New York Giants on Thursday Night Football, erasing an 11-point deficit in the last five minutes. The final result of this game was 22-21 for the hosts, who are now topping the NFC East division.
Carson Wentz threw two touchdown passes in the crucial moments, one to Greg Ward, and the second to Boston Scott, failing to make a two-point conversion on both and preserve a one-point edge with fantastic defense.
Brandon Graham sacked Giants’ QB Daniel Jones, who would then fumble the ball. Vinny Curry recovered it, securing the second win of the season for the Eagles.
“Instead of going just for the sack, went for the ball and we changed the whole game and the end of the game with that,” stated Graham after the game.
He has five sacks this year, and is fourth in the league in that aspect. Since 2011 no Eagles player had more sacks than Graham currently has.
Philadelphia opened the game well, with Carson Wentz’s TD rush, but after that, the Giants took over and started dictating the tempo. Golden Tate caught a 39-yard TD pass from Jones, who was solid in this match, but constantly failed to deliver in clutch moments.
The second-year quarterback not only lost the ball in the crucial moments but also failed to score what would be one of the most spectacular running TDs this year. Midway through the third, he rushed for 80 yards but tripped without having anyone around him and with a clear path towards the end zone.
His Giants did score through Wayne Gallman, who would carry the football into the endzone after a one-yard run. Still, the momentum created there was definitely much weaker than the one that would appear after Jones’s spectacular run.
Eventually, NY’s QB finished the match with 92 yards, and 187 passing yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. He was sacked three times.
Sam Shepard caught one TD and 59 yards, Evan Engram had 46. Golden Tate posted one catch for 39 yards, and it was for the above-mentioned score.
“We understand that you work hard, as well. There are no excuses from us. We have to improve to be better for you guys,” Giants’ head coach Joe Judge addressed the fans during the press.
Giants are struggling pretty badly since the campaign began, and Saquon Barkley’s injury only made the situation more complicated.
On the other side, Wentz threw for 359 yards, two TDs, and an interception. He also had that running score early one. So far, Philly’s quarterback has 10 picks.
Richard Rodgers caught six passes, for 85 yards, Travis Fulgham had 73, and John Hightower caught one pass for 59 yards.
The Eagles are now 2-4-1, and are on the top of the NFC East ahead of the Dallas Cowboys, who are 2-4. Philly will have a chance to pull away as these two teams meet in Week 8. Cowboys are coming to Philadelphia, and after that match, the Eagles head for New York to play against the Giants for the second and final time this year. In between these two matches, Doug Pederson and his boys will have a week bye, which will come in handy for them, to rest and heal.
The Giants (1-6) have a pretty tough clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming up in Week 8. Following that one, they will have two divisional matchups, one in Washington against the Football Team, and the other vs. Eagles.
