In his first year as a starter, Patrick Mahomes won the NFL MVP award. The 23-year old, also became the first ever Kansas City Chief who won this prestigious award.
His fantastic performances led the Chief to a divisional round where they lost against the New England Patriots. Previously, they won the AFC West division and clinched the No.1 seed in the AFC.
“This is just the beginning. We’ve got a long ways to go.” the QB finished his speech last night.
Mahomes is the youngest winner of the award since Dan Marino back in 1984. His statistics were unreal for a guy who had the first season as a starter in the NFL, 50 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 5,097 yards.

Alongside Payton Manning, Mahomes became the second player who had a season with 50+ touchdowns and 5,000 yards. Two guys before him had 50 or more TD passes, while seven threw over 5,000 yards.
Just to be clear here, he did that in his second year, first as the starter.
His flamboyant and explosive style destroyed defenses around the league, forcing defensive coordinators to explore new solutions and tactics, which have never been used before.
Not only did he managed to be efficient, but Mahomes style of play amuses fans all around the country, regardless of their colors and favorite team. No look passes, long tosses down the field, or sharp flat ones who go through the defenses like laser beams.
Kansas City had the most efficient attack when looking several parameters, and the key for that was Mahomes. Although he was left without one of the best running backs in the league, Kareem Hunt, the youngster managed to adjust his game and continue providing amazing stats, without reflecting on the team’s results.
He praised his teammates, saying that this is the award for all of them, and that is fact they are the ones who helped him the most to be where he is now.
“…I thank the coaches, coach Reid, coach Kafka, coach Bienienemy, and most of all the players. I mean, they give me their all every single day, and this is award for all of us. Thank you all.”
At the end Mahomes took special praise for the fans, saying that their love is unconditional.
“Last I want to thank Chiefs Kingdom, your passion and love is unmatched. You’re here no matter when and where.”
The MVP dazzled us all year long.

Mahomes also received the Offensive Player of the Year Award, by beating Drew Brees in the final ballot. Brees was his opponent for the MVP title too, but on both occasions, the difference in voting results was enormous.
The frightening fact for the rest of the league is that this guy has 23 years, which means that he will be here for at least 10 years. That closing sentence “this is just a beginning” sounds terrifying for all other teams.
During the ceremony, the winners of other awards had been revealed too. Aaron Donald defended his Defensive Player of the Year award. After being fantastic in 2017, LA Rams DT upgraded his game and led his team to the Super Bowl this season.
Coach of the Year was, without doubt, Matt Nagy, which was confirmed last night in Atlanta. Bears became one of the best teams in the league, mostly because of Nagy, who spent only his first season as the head coach at the Soldier Field. Vic Fangio, his former assistant and the new Denver Broncos HC, received the award for the best assistant coach for the 2018 season.
Andrew Luck won the Comeback Player of the Year. His Colts had an outstanding run in the second part of the season, which allowed them to reach the playoffs, where they even recorded a win against the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round.
Saquon Barkley was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year, while Darius Leonard won the award for the best defender among the rooks.
