Two fantastic defenders have secured their future status in the NFL today. Myles Garrett is close to clinching a colossal extension with his Browns, while on the other side, Chris Jones will sign a new contract with the Chiefs.
Garrett Gets a Five-Year $125 Million Extension
The No.1 overall selection from the 2017 NFL draft is about to become the highest-paid defensive player in the entire league. He currently has $19 million left on his remaining two years of his rookie contract. After Garrett is set to earn $25 million per year over the next five seasons, which is more than Khalil Mack has at the moment, $23.5 million.
The first to report the news about this was ESPN’s Ian Rapoport who revealed it via his Twitter account.
“The #Browns and star pass-rusher Myles Garrett are closing in on a 5-year extension worth $125M, sources say,” he wrote.

This is something expected from the Browns, who believe that the 24-year old is their franchise face. Garrett is arguably the best defender in the league, and if it weren’t for his suspension last year, due to which he had to skip the final six games, he would have won the DPOY award.
In 10 games, he had 10 sacks and was terrorizing the rival’s quarterbacks. Almost all the experts agreed upon the claim that he alone had to be credited for the majority of the Browns’ successes. Garrett and the defense were playing excellent, but Cleveland’s attack was below every expected level of play, and that especially goes for Baker Mayfield.
Garrett is a Pro Bowl player and a second-team All-Pro, both in 2018. In 37 matches for the Browns, he has 30.5 sacks and six forced fumbles.
He had some controversial moments in his past, such as the one against the Steelers when he hit their QB, Mason Rudolph, in the head with a helmet. It was a situation that led to his suspension. Apart from that, Garrett had numerous minor incidents which not only earned him financial fines, but also cost his team valuable yards when on the field.
Jones and the Chiefs Near a Four-Year $84 Million
The Super Bowl champions really decided to enter this free agency hard. After giving a half a billion-dollar contract to Patrick Mahomes, they would offer a new deal to the starting defensive tackle, Chris Jones, who is their best defender.
The Chiefs and the player arranged a deal that goes like this. The player will get $60 million in guaranteed money for an injury, $37 million after the signing, and $5 million in incentives.
Jones, 26. is an irreplaceable part of the Chiefs’ defensive team who became one of the best in the league during his stay at the Arrowhead stadium.
He would indicate his rise in 2018, once earning a spot in the second-team All-Pro, and last season he became a Pro Bowler. It is no wonder why Chiefs wanted him so badly that they even decided to put a franchise tag on him after the season ended.
The champs will no doubt get into very big salary-cap problems over the next few years. All other players would also want to get mega deals, and there simply wouldn’t be enough financial resources for all of them to be satisfied.
The Chiefs drafted Jones in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft as the 37th overall pick. It was immediately clear that he has massive talent and that the Super Bowl LIV champs did the right thing with picking him up.
