Mike McCarthy will apparently be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. The former Super Bowl champion with the Green Bay Packers reportedly agreed with the offered terms, and the confirmation of the deal is expected pretty soon. No further details are known.
He will be the ninth HC in the Cowboys history,
Adam Schefter from the ESPN, one of the most prominent insiders and NFL experts, shared the information about McCarthy’s sleepover at Jerry Jones’ house this Saturday night. After that came the info about his deal with the franchise from Texas.
New Cowboys’ HC Mike McCarthy stayed over Jerry Jones’ house on Saturday night, per source. “Once you stay at Jerrry’s house, he doesn’t lose his guy,” said source.

The 56-year old has been the head coach of the Green Bay Packers since 2006 up until 2018, and during that time, he recorded 125 wins, 77 losses, and two draws. The Packs were 10-8 in the playoffs and managed to win one Super Bowl.
That happened in 2010 once they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the SB XLV, 31-25. However, since then, the Packs didn’t win anything, and the growing frustration of the fans who watched as one of the best QB’s of all times Aaron Rodgers stagnates under McCarthy’s leadership forced the management to fire him.
That is also one of the biggest worries of those who are skeptical about Jerry Jones’ choice. McCarthy is a conservative coach, while on the other side, Dak Prescott wants creativity on the field, and he often likes to change actions and have his own choices. Meanwhile, the huge enigma, is will McCarthy adjust to the fact that Prescott wants to run the football himself.
One other thing is that he doesn’t like to risk too much, and many Packers’ fans didn’t fancy him for that reason. When you have Rodgers onboard, there is simply a need to try something exotic in certain situations, as Matt LaFleur often did this season. Yes, there were mistakes, but on many occasions, that risk paid off.
Only 3 active head coaches have a better career win pct than Mike McCarthy (.618)
– Belichick (.683)
– Tomlin (.642)
– Payton (.630) pic.twitter.com/toQKmnsXRs— CBS Sports HQ (@CBSSportsHQ) January 6, 2020
Although being a quarterback coach at some point of his career, it seems that McCarthy hasn’t developed a touch for letting the players themselves explore options on the field, and that is why many believe that he and Dak Prescott aren’t going to have a good relationship.
However, on the other side are McCarthy’s numbers, which are very impressive. During his stay in the NFL, only three head coaches had a better record, Mike Tomlin, Bill Belichick, and Sean Payton. But we need to add that the Pack had one season in which Rodgers’ campaign finished early.
Another reason why he might be fit for this job is his affection for details. Just a few people in the league are more hard-working than the new Cowboys’ coach is. And he dedicated his time off since being fired from Green Bay to study the schemes of all the teams in the league. It means that whoever plays against Dallas will have a whole lot of troubles.
By now, McCarty for sure figured out how to defend most of the teams, and this might be the X-factor for the Cowboys’ success next season.
