The Memphis Grizzlies posted their seventh win in a row, the second straight over the San Antonio Spurs. Ja Morant and his teammates blew away the Spurs, 133-102, for another road victory over Gregg Popovich’s crew.
The two sides met on Saturday, with the Grizzlies defeating the Spurs easily, 129-112, and it was hard to believe that the boys from Memphis could repeat such a performance, let alone post a more convincing victory. The game was tight only in the first period, and the Grizzs began pulling away midway through the second with an 18-2 run, that would eventually see them leaving for a break with a 69-53 lead.
Hosts tried to make a push near the end of the third, but there was no result, furthermore, the fourth quarter saw them allowing 37 points and scoring just 19.
Grizzlies were fantastic offensively, with just one player who appeared finishing the night without a double-digit number of points, John Konchar, who had five points. Other nine guys all posted 10+buckets, with Gorgui Deng Clarke being the most efficient with 19 off the bench. Deng had 9 boards, missing just one shot from the field, and having three threes.
Brandon Clarke had 18 points, adding 6 boards and two blocks in 22 minutes. Kyle Anderson dropped 17 and 8 boards, DeAndre Melton the same number of baskets with seven boards, five assists, and five three-pointers. Tyus Jones posted a double-double off the bench, 11 points and 14 assists, while Desmond Bane had 10 buckets.
Memphis’ leading duo, Morant-Brooks, had 13 points apiece, with these two guys not needing to play 100% tonight.
Guests had a superb shooting night, with 55.9% off the field and 15 threes in 30 attempts. They would finish the night with 37 assists, a season-high for the unit from Tennessee.
“They are continuing to understand that being unselfish as a team is going to set you up for success as an individual and the team up for success,” Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said.

On the other side, apart from Keldon Johnson, who had 25 points and 10 boards, there were no players worthy of mentioning. DeMar De Rozan and LaMarcus Aldridge had 14 and 12 points, respectively, far too low for players of their status.
Gregg Popovich was realistic following the match, admitting that his team didn’t stand any chance of winning whatsoever and that the Grizzlies were far better.
“In a 48-minute game, I’d say that probably in the third quarter, we looked like we looked lately for about six minutes. But, other than that, they sliced us and diced us and deserved the wins, for sure.”
Even though the Spurs sit above .500 with 11 wins and 10 losses, they look pretty pale. DeRozan is not playing as expected, and the same goes for Aldridge, whose numbers are very bad. The former All-Star center scores 14.1 points and 4.3 boards per game, which is embarrassing, having in mind that he earns around $24 million this year.
Overall, the entire Spurs’ team is mediocre, which is something we just didn’t get used to seeing.
The Spurs are now hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves before jumping to Houston for a state derby against the Rockets. After that, they have back-to-back events at home against the Warriors.
Memphis will have a tough test in Indiana against the Pacers already this Tuesday night, before hosting the Rockets on Thursday. After that, Morant and the boys head to New Orleans to meet Zion Williamson.
