Mateusz Gamrot defeated Arman Tsakuryan in the main event of the UFC on ESPN 38. The two lightweights have displayed a fantastic performance, and we can say that the battle was pure enjoyment for all UFC fans.
In the end, Gamrot, a more experienced fighter, won via unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring in his favor, 48-47. This was the 21st win for the Polish fighter, who was a two-division champion back home in the KSW organization, one of the most respectable on European soil.
He had one of the most talented lightweights in the UFC opposite him, as Tsarukyan held an 18-2 record coming into this event. The Armenian fighter opened the bout well, scoring a takedown and trying to impose his own tempo.

Early in the second, he inflicted a hard body kick to Gamrot, which the Pole ate pretty well, considering the power of the hit. After that, Tsarukyan landed another body kick, and at that point, he looked better than the rival.
The same took place early in the third, but after that, Gamrot began improving his position and slowly changing the situation in the octagon. The complete flip was seen in the fourth sequence when Gamrot took over the wheel and began firing from all cylinders. Though Tsarukyan landed a big spinning back fist that dropped his opponent on the mat for the moment, Gamrot got back on his feet immediately.
Tsarukyan’s body shot didn’t harm Gamrot, who was then all over the rival, securing a takedown and getting the round in his favor. A similar thing was seen in the final, fifth round, with Tsarukyan sweeping Gamrot with a leg kick, but the Pole quickly recovered and scored one more takedown.
We have to say that overall, both of the fighters were pretty close, and that the Fight of the Night Bonus went into the right hands.
After the battle, Gamrot called out Justin Gaethje. According to the Pole, the Highlight is the most entertaining fighter in the division and he wants to meet him next.
“Now, I want to fight with Justin Gaethje,” he said during his post-fight interview. “Justin Gaethje’s the most brutal guy in this division. I want to fight next with him.”

This is the Polish fighter’s sixth consecutive win, who had five stoppages in a row until last night. He had one loss in the UFC, which was on his debut against Guram Kutateladze, via split decision.
The 25-year-old Tsarukyan suffered his second loss in the organization, but he showed incredible talent, once again proving that he is the division’s future. By far, the Armenian is the most promising guy among lightweights, and he has the potential to win the title someday.
“I had to show a better fight than this one,” Tsarukyan said. “I know me. I don’t know what happened.”
In other fights of the night, Shavkat Rakhmonov was better than Neil Magny in the welterweight bout. He submitted the rival via guillotine choke, with two seconds left in the second round, which is why he got the Performance of the Night Bonus.
Thiago Moises and Josh Parisian also got the same bonus for their wins. Moises beat Christos Giagos via rear-naked choke in the first round of their lightweight battle, while Parisian beat Alan Baudot. He knocked out the heavyweight at 3:04 of the second round, earning his 15th win in 20 bouts.
At last, Umar Nurmagomedov was better than Nate Maness via unanimous decision, dominating the rival throughout all three rounds.
