Luis Suarez scored a goal and assisted for one more in Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 win over Barcelona tonight.
The Uruguayan got his revenge for being snubbed out two summers ago and having to leave Blaugrana after all that he did for this team. He was arguably one of the most deserved players for all the successes, along with Xavi, Messi, and Iniesta. Yet, he wouldn’t receive proper treatment once leaving.
Tonight, he was more than motivated to show his former club what is he all about. Suarez found Thomas Lemar in the 23rd minute, and the French scored for 1-0. We need to add that Lemar played exceptionally well, and that he created a lot of problems for the guests from Catalonia.
The French international was the one who set the tone in the opening few minutes, especially in front of Barcelona’s net. He would later assist Suarez for 2-0, and Los Culos’ knockout. This was the first game for Lemar in Atletico, in which he scored and assisted.

Suarez was ice cold after scoring a goal, as he didn’t want to disrespect the fans.
“I didn’t celebrate the goal out of respect for the club fans,” he said and added. “I am happy for Atlético’s victory, I defend this shirt, and it is important to win. The rival is special because of what I lived there, but my job is to dedicate myself 100% for Atleti.”
Atletico is now second in the standings with the same number of points as Real Madrid, who has a game in hand.
The Spanish champions have been very confident from the start until the end, and even though Barca improved in the second half, there weren’t any doubts about the hosts’ win.
Gerard Pique admitted that after the game, adding that his team couldn’t break the rival’s defense.
“We could spend three hours playing, and we would not score a goal. We’re suffering right now. There is no other option but to keep fighting and working.”
Barcelona is in a terrible place right now. The situation is not good at all, both on and off the field. The debts are enormous, there isn’t enough money, and the results on the field are getting worse.

After a kick in the teeth in Lisbon against Benfica, who won the UCL matchup on Wednesday, 3-0, this is yet another painful blow for the five-time European champions. At least one thing is solved for now, and that is Ronald Koeman’s status.
After several weeks of filling the media headlines with various speculations regarding the Dutchman’s future, the situation calmed down. Barcelona’s board stated earlier today that they wouldn’t change the head coach in the near future. Truth be told, Koeman can’t be blamed for anything because he got the team in the worst possible condition.
Up next, there is a two-week pause due to international matches, and it comes in the perfect moment for Blaugrana. Their first opponent after the break will be Valencia, who sits eighth in the standings with five points fewer than Atletico.
On the other side, Atletico will visit Granada, and after that, host Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League. Both of these matches take place on October 17.
