LA Rams routed the New England Patriots, 24-3, putting the pressure on the Seattle Seahawks before their contest against the New York Jets.
The two sides are battling for the No.1 place in the NFC West, and the Rams will stay atop of the same, at least until Sunday. If the Jets make a massive sensation, they could remain longer.
However, the Rams had one more motive for winning this event, and that is the lost Super Bowl LIII. The Pats’ defense would harass Jared Goff and LA’s offense in that one, ruthlessly denying their attempts to win the Vince Lombardy trophy. Even though this match didn’t have a near close significance as the one from February 3, 2019, it made the Rams’ players happy more than usual. After all, they most likely ended the Patriots’ chances for the playoff appearance.
“We definitely wanted that payback, definitely wanted to get our revenge from the Super Bowl,” Rams DL Michael Brockers said.
Brockers gave his very best in tonight’s matchup, sacking Cam Newton twice and creating numerous problems to the Patriots’ offense. Aaron Donald was right behind with 1.5 sacks, and the entire Rams’ defense was looking great, limiting the guests to just 220 yards from the scrimmage. Rams’ defenders recorded six sacks, four on Newton and two on Jarrett Stidham, for a combined of 33 negative yards.
In the meantime, LB Kenny Young would extend Newton’s misery, intercepting his pass and returning it all the way home, for a 79-yard TD.
But the defenders weren’t in the middle of attention, even though they had a near-perfect night. The 21-year old running back rookie, Cam Akers took the spotlight, with 171 rushing yards in 21 carries. For the last few weeks, this guy emerged as one of the best players in McVay’s crew.
“When you go out at practice and you prepare the right way, you get rewarded,” Akers told the reporters following the game.
On the other side, Cam Newton had a disastrous night, with the Pats’ QB having 119 yards and just nine completions in 16 passing attempts. Newton had one pick and a fumble, and was benched with some 10 minutes left on the clock. Media representatives wanted to hear from Bill Belichick what is Newton’s status, and the legendary head coach stated that nothing changed despite this loss.
“Cam’s our quarterback,” he said.
Super Cam had issues with an abdomen injury over the past two matches, but he wasn’t looking for an alibi in that.
“We just got to be better, and it starts with me personally,” he said. “Just have to make more plays, and that’s what it comes down to.”
The Patriots 6-7 are in a tough place regarding the playoff race. In order to reach that seventh spot, they need to defeat all three remaining opponents (Dolphins on the road, Bills, Jets at home) and have their playoff competitors lose their events. The chances are against them, but we are pretty sure that Belichick won’t surrender that easily.
Rams (9-4) await the Jets next week, before going to Seattle for the most important game of the season. That will be the clash for the NFC West’s first place and a much easier schedule in the playoffs. One other tough challenge comes following the game in Seattle, and that is meeting the Cards, only this event takes place at the SoFi Stadium.
