Kyrie Irving is still confident that his Boston Celtics are going to get back in the saddle when it matters the most.
For Uncle Drew, the struggles in Boston’s game are just a temporary thing, and there is no way that the Celts are going to perform like this during the offseason.
He said that his focus is on getting ready for the playoffs, and all the challenges that come along with it.
“At this point of the season, I’m on the VersaClimber, I’m on the treadmill, I’m getting ready to play 40-plus minutes and getting ready for the wars and battles.”
Now, it would be interesting to know who is the opponent in those “wars and battles,” because Boston and Irving have problems coming up from all sides.
Many of the media are already talking about the situation in the locker room, which is a bit messy, and the fact that Irving has problems with the younger core of the team. But nothing is official yet, and all that could be changed if Boston plays well in the postseason.
Right now, prospects for something like that are not looking good.
But for Irving, things are not that bad as others see them.
“It’s been a whole season doing so, but there’s light at the end of all this. That’s probably where my patience will always lie, is knowing that something’s beyond this.”
The position of the Celtics is entirely different than at the start of this campaign. Back then they were considered to be the only worthy challenger of the Golden State Warriors. Boston’s depth and versatility were in the focus of all media and most of them predicted that Brad Stevens’ team has what it takes to bring down the champions from Oakland.
Nowadays, we don’t have many of them sticking to that story.
As the campaign progressed, Boston’s chemistry decreased. Occasionally, they had some fantastic games, like against the above-mentioned Warriors, but that looked more like a one-time explosion because there was no consistency in their performances.
Brad Stevens has no problems with identifying the issues which bother his team. He mentioned one specific aspect of the game which was an example for all other things.
“We were a better defensive team in the first two months of the season than we’ve played at any time in the last month. So, to me, it’s not about what we’re doing. It’s about how well we do it every single night,” Stevens said.
Is it about the motivation or something else, it doesn’t matter, the main point is that the Celtics are underachieving, which is correct. But when looking numbers, you might be confused a little bit.
The Celtics’ have the ninth best offense in the league, while on the other side, fifth-best defense. It’s kind of confusing as we already said. Especially when you look at the Eastern Conference standings, and see that they currently sit at place No.5 with 43 wins and 31 losses. With 8 contest to go, Celts are behind the Indiana Pacers two games.
There are nice chances to jump over the guys from Indiana, as they meet them twice in those eight matches. On Saturday, the 30th of March, at TD Garden, and seven days later at Banker Life Fieldhouse.
In the meantime, Irving and the crew have two meetings with Miami, one against the Nets, Cavs, Magic, and Wizards. So we can say that they have a solid schedule which gives them nice chances of reaching the home field advantage.
But that won’t be of any importance if this team doesn’t figure out how to improve the overall level of play. They might eliminate Indiana, but after that Giannis and Milwaukee Bucks are standing in the way.
And that is where you either give your best or suffer a humiliating experience.
