Super Bowl champions, Kansas City Chiefs had to work hard in order to defeat their AFC South divisional rivals, the Denver Broncos. Mahomes and his boys won 22-16 in the end, but not before experiencing a lot of resistance from the other side.
However, tonight’s grind was rewarded with a playoff spot. The Chiefs are now officially in the postseason, as they have 11 wins and one loss four rounds before the end of the regular part of the season. This will be the sixth year in a row for KC to reach the playoffs. Still, that is not enough for these guys.
“It’s obviously a big deal — you want to find a way to get in the playoffs,” Patrick Mahomes said, “but we have bigger goals.”
The 2018 NFL MVP had a troublesome night, but he still didn’t lose composure. Mahomes wasn’t picked while managing to deliver one touchdown pass and 318 yards. The majority of Chiefs’ points were provided by Harrison Butker, who was perfect from the field, hitting all five of his field-goal attempts.
Denver didn’t allow Mahomes to have his usual high-percentage efficiency once coming close to the endzone, which was the biggest reason why guests stayed in the game until the very end. They would have the chance to turn the situation upside-down during the last minute, yet Drew Lock wasted it. Tyrann Mathieu picked his pass at fourth-and-5, with 33 seconds to go, ending this event, and adding one more interception to his tally last night.
The Broncos’ QB was unhappy with the outcome, knowing that his team was pretty close to making an upset here.
“We did play them closer than we have before, but I mean, what does that get you? Nothing. It gets you an upset locker room. It gets you a sad flight home,” he said.
Lock ended the contest with 151 passing yards for two touchdown scores and two interceptions. He wasn’t sacked nor had any fumbles, but the completion percentage was at the low level, 15 of 28.
Tim Patrick caught both of his TD tosses, with the 27-year old wide receiver ending the contest with 44 yards on four receptions. One guy who stood above all others in Broncos’ attack was Melvin Gordon, with 15 rushes for 131 yards, adding 11 more receiving yards.
Among the Chiefs, Travis Kelce had a show of his own, with 136 receiving yards on 8 catches, for a TD. After tonight’s game, Kelce became the only TE in the history of the NFL with five 1000+yard seasons.
“Every QB needs a go-to guy, and ours is fortunate to have a couple, but [No.] 87 is a big one for him,” Andy Reid stated following the game about the Mahomes-Kelce duo.
The Chiefs will have a very challenging match coming up next, with them facing the Dolphins in Miami. If they want to continue pursuing the Pittsburgh Steelers for the top of the AFC, they would need to beat Brian Flores’ crew. After that, the champions have a superspectacle against the New Orleans Saints down in Louisiana.
Denver, on the other side, doesn’t have any chances for the playoffs. They, too, are playing on the road next Sunday, only against the Carolina Panthers, who are also out of the playoff picture. The following week, the Broncos are coming back home and await the Buffalo Bills.
