Jorge Masvidal agreed to meet Usman on very short notice, setting the MMA community on fire. There was hope for seeing this battle a long time ago, and after a failed attempts to book one, it seemed that the fans would have to wait for quite some time before witnessing the Gamebred and the Nigerian Nightmare in the octagon.
Both fighters are pumped up at the moment, as they don’t have any respect towards one another. Usman (16-1 MMA, 11-0 UFC) didn’t hesitate for one second to start with trash talk. Apart from saying the usual stuff, which includes the insults and everything besides it, he stated that the BMF belt Masvidal has, would soon become his.
“They’re saying it’s a ‘BMF’ – they’re really considering this a real title, kind of an interim thing or whatever. They’re really considering this a title. So you know, yes – after I go out there and beat his ass and ragdoll him, that (expletive) is coming home with me so I can throw it in my closet,” he said.

On the other side, Masvidal (35-13 MMA, 12-6 UFC) too, wasn’t polite at all, and he even pictured the ending of the fight.
“His body is grasping for air as I’ve got my hand raised over him. I’m just going to baptize him, man, for the world to see. It’s going to be violent.”
This is something expected from these fighters who, apart from being the very best in the welterweight division, are the biggest talkers as well. Their popularity and reputation were made not just inside, but outside the ring as well.
Regarding the chances in this contest, Usman is the favorite, for various reasons. The biggest one is, of course, the fact that he had full preparations for this bout, while on the other side, Masvidal has six days to prepare, and to cut 22 pounds.
It is a very hard process, which would, for sure, affect his body and energy level. His win at the UFC 251 would be a massive sensation. Then again, Justin Gaethje was in a similar position and had practically no chances against Tony Ferguson, yet he defeated El Cucuy.
Usman took the title against Tyron Woodley, and he later defeated Colby Covington to become the undisputed champion of the welterweight division.
Meanwhile, Masvidal beat Nate Diaz in the match for the unofficial BMF title, and before that, he trashed Ben Askren, inflicting him the fastest knockout in the UFC history. Before that, Gamebred knocked out Darren Till.
The two have been trying to book a match for a while, but according to sources, Masvidal wasn’t happy with the financial terms, and he stopped negotiations. Per the same sources, he wanted to have a rematch with Diaz and pushed for the organization to head into that direction. In the meantime, things have changed and it seemed that Dana White’s offer was much better now.
