Jose Mourinho is appointed as the new manager of the Tottenham Hotspur. The Special One returns to Premier League once again, but this time with the club just a few expected to see him at.
Early this morning in London, the two parties reached an agreement, and the Portuguese manager signed a four-year deal. The details were not disclosed, but it seems that the new manager will have all the freedom in decision-making and what is more important, he is in North London for the long run.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Head Coach on a contract that runs until the end of the 2022/23 season,” wrote in the official statement on the Spurs’ website.
Less than 12 hours since firing Mauricio Pochettino, the deal has been struck with one of the best managers of all times. Mourinho, a highly controversial figure, knows how to win trophies, and that is something Tottenham’s fans and management craves for.

He has a vast experience in English football, and during the two stints with Chelsea, Mourinho won two Premiership titles. Apart from that, he has three EFL Cups, two FA Cups and one Community Shield with the Blues. During his stay with Manchester United, he brought UEFA Europa League trophy to Old Trafford and added one more EFL Cup and Community Shield.
Over the last five years with Pochettino in charge, the silverware was always one step away from the team. Tottenham lost the English Football League Cup finals in 2015, and last year’s Champions League finals versus Liverpool. In between, they had two third places in the Premiership, and were runners-up in 2016, when Leicester won the title.
Lately, things haven’t been good in the locker room, and some sources are suggesting that Pochettino’s departure was, in fact, forced by the players who didn’t have a proper relationship with him anymore.

The stretch of poor results only made it worse, and something had to be done. The last straw was a draw at home against Sheffield United last weekend, 1-1. The way Poch received notice about his release is suggesting that the negotiations with Mourinho had been going on for a while. Instead of firing the Argentinian right after the game against the Blades, they waited for almost 10 days. And following that, Mourinho checked in at the Tottenham Stadium in a matter of hours.
Nevertheless, the situation is now resolved. Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy, is delighted with his appointment, and he expects a new leaf in the club’s history.
“In Jose, we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honors at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room,” he said.
Mourinho’s debut will be this Sunday against West Ham United on the road.
As for Pochettino, he is the primary target of Bayern Munich, according to the majority of the experts. Even while he was in charge at Tottenham, there Bavarians expressed interest in his signature. That increased over the last few weeks when things began to fall apart in North London, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in Munich in the near future. The German champs have fired Niko Kovac, and are without a permanent manager currently.
