Jimmy Garoppolo and his San Francisco 49ers took down LA Rams on Sunday Night Football, redeeming themselves for the recent poor performances. The final result of this divisional matchup was 24-16 for the home team, who regained a part of its lost confidence.
Garoppolo, who was experiencing several blows in a short period of time that culminated with him being benched against the Miami Dolphins, was shining in this match. The former backup for Tom Brady, had 268 yards, 23-of-33 and three touchdown passes, without a single turnover. All of his three TDs were in the first half, along with more than 200 yards.
“Jimmy was hindered last week,” receiver Brandon Aiyuk said about his teammate. “Jimmy is a baller, so we all knew that he was going to bounce back and play a great game. This week in practice, you can see the urgency, especially in him.”
In no time, the 49ers were up 14-0, with Garoppolo throwing a TD pass on the first drive of the game to Deebo Samuel. After that, early in the second period, he added another one to George Kittle, for 44 yards, which was the confirmation that the 49ers are on a good path.
Aiyuk delivered the third score for the hosts with 1:47 until the break, and at that point, San Francisco and a 21-6 lead.
Meanwhile, Jared Goff, who has been pretty solid up to this game, couldn’t handle the situation, with the Rams often having sloppy drives without focus and consistency. By far, it was the worst performance for the former No.1 pick and his entire crew since the start of the campaign.
Goff had 19 completions in 38 passes, for two TDs and one interception, and 198 yards.
“Clearly wasn’t my best,” he said. “Uncharacteristic stuff, missing some guys open there early. Something that I’ve never done in my life and don’t expect to repeat.”
The second half was a bit calmer than the first, with the teams trading field goals, and the Rams scoring a TD with 3:24 before the end, approaching to eight points. Yet they couldn’t take the ball from the 49ers until the end of the game. Garoppolo routinely closed the match for one massive victory.
“I was very impressed with the character of our team and the way they carried themselves and the way they came out to practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and really the way they responded to all of us getting embarrassed,” Kyle Shanahan spoke following the match, constantly emphasizing how his team bounced back following a loss to Dolphins.
George Kittle was the best on the field besides Garoppolo, with 109 yards on 7 catches, while Samuel had 66 on 6 receptions. Raheem Mostert generated 65 yards on the ground in 17 snaps, coming out in the second half due to another injury.
Darrell Henderson rushed for 88 yards on 14 carries for the Rams, Tyler Higbee had three receptions for 56 yards. Josh Reynolds 45 and a TD, Tobert Woods, also caught one TD.
The Rams are now up against the Chicago Bears at the SoFi stadium. It will be a Monday Night Football match, and a chance to get back on track. Following this challenge, they will meet the Miami Dolphins on the road.
As for the 49ers, their schedule is pretty tough. Next week they face the New England Patriots in Foxborough, and after that travel across the country, all the way to Seattle to meet the divisional rivals, the Seahawks.
