Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hinted yesterday that the extension running back Ezekiel Elliot wants might be agreed. Jones, the charismatic GM of the world’s most expensive franchise, stated that the deal could be reached, but mentioned that the Cowboys have to be careful while making the same.
“When have I not been able to get a deal done,” stated Jones when asked about Elliot’s future in Texas.
Just to remind you, the player decided to exercise a holdout, in order to get the extension. According to some of the experts, Zeke aims to be the highest-paid RB in the league. Right now the guys on his position with the biggest salary are Todd Gurley from the Rams with more than $14.3 million, then Jets’ Le’Veon Bell with $13,125 million and David Johnson with $13 million per season.

Elliot will earn $3,853,137 in the upcoming season and $9,099,000 in 2020, which is the last year of his contract. He could receive a bonus of more than $4 million in 2019, but that is not guaranteed.
The holdout “virus” got Zeke too, and after Michael Thomas who was “cured” with the biggest contract for one wide receiver, it is no rocket science to guess what will solve this problem. But Jones doesn’t want to rush into matters, especially because his team needs to evaluate several things before they get this deal done. The Cowboys need to sign an extension with Dak Prescott, and have Amari Cooper’s future at the table too.
They need to find a way and to try fit in all three guys into a sustainable long-term projection which will keep the Cowboys at the top, but without spending big money on the luxury taxes. Jones is perfectly aware of that, and he mentioned that after Thursday’s training session.
“As far as doing something that would disrupt and shake the base of our plans for how to keep the talent we’ve got here, I’m not about to shake that loose.”
Many of the reporters wanted to know his thoughts on Elliot’s decision to proceed with a holdout and is he concerned about the player’s fitness. The 77-year old stated that he isn’t even thinking about that.
“That’s not even an issue. I’m not concerned about him missing the reps out here relative to getting his timing down. All of that is very easy for my mind to deal with.”
Elliot is arguably one of the best running backs in the league, if not the best. His numbers since entering the league are fantastic. In 2018 season, Zeke was the NFL rushing leader, which was his second time, as he did the same in his rookie year, 2016. Besides that, he is a two-time Pro Bowl, two-time All-Pro and has established his name in every possible way.
In 40 starts for the Cowboys, Elliot has 4,048 rushing and 1,199 receiving yards, all that for 34 touchdowns.
The fourth overall pick from the 2016 NFL draft is in lately in the center of attention because of off-field problems. In January he had an incident in Las Vegas at one night club when he had a brief physical altercation with a security guard.
That is not the first time for Elliot to have trouble with the law. Domestic violence and crude behavior towards his girlfriend (at the time), were the reasons for his suspension at the start of 2017 season.
