Shocking news has just emerged and set fire throughout the NFL league. One of the best tight ends in history if this game, Jason Witten decided to interrupt his retirement and come back to play one more year for his Dallas Cowboys.
Just a few days following Jerry Jones’ interview in which he stated, that his organization has big plans, and that he doesn’t want to reveal them, this unexpected move took place.
Most of the fans believed that the Cowboys are about to sign some huge contract with one of their starters, but the focus was on something else. That is for now.
The team revealed this info earlier today.
The 36-year old explained that his desire to play and compete is way too big to sit around and talk about the game, and also added that he likes the current group of players, filled with youth, talent and championship potential. His contract will last one year and is worth $3.5 million.
“The fire inside of me to compete and play this game is just burning too strong,” Witten said. “This team has a great group of rising young stars, and I want to help them make a run at a championship.”
Jason Witten’s retirement wasn’t planned at the time, and he had a lot of doubts about it before signing a four-year deal with ESPN as an analysis on Monday Night Football. Although he didn’t shine in that role, that wasn’t the reason for his sudden comeback on the field.
According to several sources, Witten still feels he has enough to give, and that he could upgrade Dallas young core with his experience and vast knowledge.
Plus, the love for the game is enormous with this guy.
The journalists approached Witten with a question about his possible return, earlier this month. At that moment he didn’t have a clear answer, and tried to avoid the answer.
But what he told, is that he misses everything, from the games, training camps, and above all his Cowboys.
“Look, every day I was a part of the Cowboys, and even before that, I loved the game of football. I loved the process of it…I loved getting better and adversity and going through it with [the] guys, that shared commitment part of it. Nothing can replace that feeling and I knew that.”
It seems that even then the player had some plans about his comeback, but didn’t want to expose them. It is quite possible that head coach Jason Garrett and Jerry Jones used their influence to bring back the guy who spent 15 years at Arlington.
During the previous season, Garrett was already trying to persuade Cowboys’ legend to get back on the field, because he needed Witten’s qualities for the playoffs and the end of the season.
With Prescott at QB, Elliot as a running back and Witten and Cooper in front, the Cowboys will have one hell of an attack.
Of course, it can’t be expected from him to play as before and spend 80% of the game on the field. But in the crucial moments, there is no doubt that he has enough knowledge and power to make big-time plays, despite his age.
The 6-6 265-pound TE was drafted in the third round of the 2003 NFL draft as a 69th overall pick. During his stint in Dallas, he became the franchise leader in games played (239), receptions (1,152) and receiving yards (12,448).
Witten as elected to be a Pro Bowl 11 times, and was two-time First-team All-Pro. In 2012, he received the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
Only Tony Gonzales has more receptions and receiving yards as a tight end than him.
This could indicate that the Cowboys will aim the title next season. With Witten on board, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see some other additions which would make this team a Super Bowl contender. Though, when looking at them better, they already are one.
