Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett isn’t thinking about his contract status at the moment, despite him entering the final year of the deal. The 53-year-old stated that currently, it is not his priority.
The Cowboys are in a tough position. Ezekiel Elliot decided not to report to the training camp, and to proceed with a holdout. One of the best running backs in the league isn’t willing to come back to the team until Jerry Jones offers him a new fat deal. Unlike him, the franchise head coach has a different approach in the same situation.
“To be honest with you, I never really think about that. I never thought about that as a player. I don’t think about that as a coach,” Garrett said.
He is entering the final year of a five-year extension signed in 2014. Back then, Jerry Jones decided to reward Garrett with a $30 million deal after he won the NFC East division and entered the playoffs after four years.
Garrett also revealed that he likes his job, and that he feels fortunate for having the opportunity to enjoy it.
“I just come to work every day and try to do the best job that I can do in the position that I have. Very fortunate to do what I love to do in this great league, in this great organization with the people that we have, the coaching staff that we have, the players, and the support staff that we have.”
This will be Garrett’s ninth season as a Cowboys head coach. He replaced Wade Philips in 2010, and started a new chapter in franchise’s history. At the moment, he has three playoff appearances posting two wins and three losses. But what hurts the fans is the fact that Dallas never jumped over the Divisional Round under Garrett’s leadership.
Meanwhile, the team started to show signs of a big improvement during the last season. Dak Prescott and Elliot developed into elite players, and with the addition of Amari Cooper, the Cowboys have a respectable crew. They eliminated Seattle Seahawks, in the Wild Card round, and were stopped afterward by the later NFC champions, the LA Rams. Dallas had a chance to win that contest but failed to use it.
"If the Dallas Cowboys fall short of expectations because Zeke Elliott's not there, Jason Garrett's more likely to be fired after this season."

Nevertheless, this generation looks very promising. After almost a decade, it could be said that Cowboys have a respectable strength and that they might create a considerable noise in the playoffs.
Partially, that is Garrett’s work. He had a huge influence when picking the players from the draft and on their later development.
Jerry Jones already set the goal in front of his head coach, and that is to take the team to another level. By that, the charismatic owner probably thinks to reach at least the NFC championship game. That is probably why he wants to wait and see what happens this year, and whether Garrett has the skills to lead the Cowboys back to the top.
So far his record in Arlington has been solid, and after 136 games under his leadership, Dallas recorded 77 wins and 59 losses. The last three years were especially successful, with 32 triumphs and 16 defeats, but notable results in the postseason were not there. It could be said that this year is the crucial campaign for Garrett’s future with the Cowboys.
