Iga Swiatek from Poland is the new Roland Garros ladies champion! The 19-year old defeated USA’s Sofia Kenin, 6-4, 6-1, completing its perfect path to the title.
The first-ever player from Poland to win the trophy in either of the competitions, didn’t lose a single set throughout the tournament. She displayed domination rarely seen, setting new standards for the players to come.
“I’m so happy and I’m so glad that my family was here finally and I don’t know, it’s just overwhelming for me,” Swiatek said. “Two years ago, I won the junior Grand Slam [at Roland-Garros] and now I’m here.

Her final match in the tournament lasted 80 minutes. Swiatek would instantly impose her tempo, reaching a break following three games of the opening set. Kenin, however, responded with the same measure, but her surge was short-breathed.
The Pole got another break point, and then when everyone expected her to close the sequence easily, she dropped the set point to do that, before losing her serve. For one moment, the momentum was on Kenin’s side, but she couldn’t utilize it, and the Pole won the set after another break.
The second set started unexpectedly, with Kenin winning another break. She looked confident and capable of overcoming the current situation, but at the same time, Swiatek just shifted into a higher gear, beginning to hurt the rival from all over the place.
Kenin’s medical timeout due to issues with her leg didn’t help, and from that moment on, there was just one player on Philippe Chatrier’s clay. Swiatek wouldn’t care about her opponent’s troubles, and she just slashed the sixth-seeded player.
Many believe that the outcome would be the same regardless of Kenin’s leg problems. Swiatek was just too strong for the American, and her furious attacks were unstoppable. But that wasn’t the case only in this match, but the entire tournament.
Swiatek hadn’t lost more than five games in one match, often limiting her rivals to just two or three. The way she bashed Simona Halep in the fourth round, 6-1, 6-2, will be remembered for a long time.

This is the first time for the Polish teenager to reach the top 4 of one Grand Slam, and she immediately took the title. For the no.54 in the WTA rankings, this is superb. After the newest rankings on Monday, she will jump all the way to place no.17.
“It feels like such a short time. I’m just overwhelmed. Thanks for cheering it was such an amazing final. I was just mentally consistent, and I just wanted to play aggressive as in previous rounds. Today was really stressful for me so it was kind of hard,” Swiatek said.
As for Kenin, she didn’t win her second GS title. After reaching the silverware at the start of the year in Australia, the 21-year old quickly became one of the most popular players in the world. Kenin already became one of the best in her competition, with the potential to improve.
After Roland Garros, it seems that she and Swiatek are going to have a long and interesting rivalry ahead of them in the years to come.
Up next we have the men’s finals between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. The two played 54 times before this event, and always provided good fun. We are more than positive that the same will be with this one. Match is set for Sunday.
