The stage is all set. Tomorrow we will witness two quarter-final series of one of the biggest tournaments in the history of eSports, LoL World Championship 2018.
Before the Worlds 2018, both the opponents, Fnatic, and Edward Gaming performed well in the season. Their main strength lies within the team itself and not just the individual players. In Words 2018, Fnatic and Edward Gaming performed exceptionally well throughout the group stages and now the stakes are high on the big stage.
The reason why we have picked this match for you is that China takes on Europe on the biggest stage of the competitive world of League of Legends. In this stage of the competition, there can’t be a clear-cut winner so we will have to comprehensively look into the stats of both teams.
EDward Gaming, the monsters of Play In
One small defeat throughout the Play-In phase is the record of the third Chinese team at the World’s that upset the hierarchy of this group C. Despite a 2018 season being the least disappointing compared to last year, the Chinese seed #1, EDward Gaming, is still in very good shape since the group stage of the Split, they went back to eliminate the Rogue Warriors in the grand finals.
Like any good Chinese team that respects itself, their strength is aggression. Ultra-dominant in the lane phase and early game, EDG can count on his brilliant support and shot caller, Meiko, to carry out the strategy of his team. If it is clear that the teams present in Play In were not at the level of EDward Gaming. The players were all the same exhibited by their mechanics and their ability to crush their opponents 1v1. Scout was, as expected, impregnable at mid and rookies Haro and iBoy have shown that their individual skill is not to question. The only downside of the squad is the lack of experience of this kind which is a huge problem for them.
Participating in the Worlds since 2014, the team has never passed through the quarter-finals of the competition. After the disappointment of the 2017 edition, EDward Gaming will have to prove that it is still one of the best Chinese teams and present as a direct competitor for the first place of the group. Beware of the overconfidence that cost them their one and only loss in the Play-In phase against Team Liquid.
Fnatic
Double champions of the LCS EU this year, the Fnatic fly to the assault of the Worlds 2018.
In Spring Split, they won and took the first place in the regular season. After a hand injury of the top laner Soaz lantern, it is their replacement Bwipo, a rookie in LCS, who played for the team in the Spring Playoffs. All the problems were brilliantly countered by this team that won (3 – 0) in the final against the G2 Esports. ADC Rekkles played an important role in the victory and was awarded the MVP Trophy award.
With this victory, the team has the opportunity to represent Europe at the MSI. Despite a disappointing loss to the Royal Never Give Up in the semifinals (0 – 3), Caps, sometimes nicknamed “Baby Faker”, is noted internationally. He appears as one of the best mid-laners of the tournament.
Star-stud player Rekkles
During Summer Split, changes in the meta for the ADC disrupted the roster of the team. As a result, the team’s star ADC, Rekkles was away for much of the season. It is Bwipo that we found on the bot lane to defend the title of the champions. A successful strategy since Fnatic is again at the top of the regular season standings. During the Playoffs, the long-awaited return of Rekkles allows the team to continue its momentum.
For LCS EU Summer, Caps is awarded the MVP title. The player has proven time and again his efficiency on his lane, taking the lead with a wide range of champions from Irelia to Vayne, through Wukong. Thanks to the 6 members of his team, Fnatic won their second trophy of the year in LCS EU, confirming their place of 1st seed EU LCS. For these Worlds 2018, many consider the team as the best European hope. The objective of the black and orange is clear: to pass the Groups to represent the colors of Europe to the quarterfinals and more!
Rasmus “Caps” Winther- The Key to Victory
MVP Summer Split, this young player has gradually made its way in the middle of legends.
His beginnings are not as glorious as he is today. but it does not demerit: despite a third place at the EU LCS Spring 2017, the team finished first place in the 2017 EU Regional Finals. Yet his first world championships didn’t go as expected: with exceptional stats, Caps was still unable to lead his team to victory.
With the change of Meta and absence of AD Carry Rekkles during the Summer Split 2018, the team can no longer rely on its flagship player and must review its strategy. Caps then became the other center of attention in the game. He is distinguished by exotic picks like Wukong against Misfits in week 5 of the regular season: Fnatic then won against the team and was undefeated! Caps repeated this feat in the semifinals with a Vayne pick that no one could have expected.
This young player managed the feat of taking his team to the Worlds, placing Fnatic first European seed (victory against Schalke 04 in the final). Unpredictable and impulsive, Caps has not finished to impress us! He surely is a prodigy and can be crucial for Fnatic if they are aiming to lift the title this year. If things don’t go well for the starlet, then Fnatic have Rekkles in the bot lane to steer the team to victory.
Final Verdict
So, after all this assessment, it is fair to say that, Fnatic should come out victorious. They have been phenomenal this year and should be able to win the series. EDG might have done decently in the Play-In stage but cannot stand the wrath of the European giants. EDG has shown a lot of signs of weakness which can be easily exploited by Caps and his teammates.
Fnatic 3 – 1 Edward Gaming.
