Tottenham awaits Manchester United in what might be the key match of the season for both sides. The two powerhouses are competing for the fifth spot in the English Premier League standings with the note that the Red Devils currently hold that place and are four points away from the Spurs. Both teams need to win here, otherwise, the competition would be in a better position for the upcoming challenges. By the way, check out the rest of the EPL picks, delivered by my colleague and friend Kurt Boyer.
Preview
Tottenham (+190) is not in a good position at all. The injuries and the pressure will be the main problem for the hosts in this one. Mourinho’s side is underachieving throughout the entire season, partially because of injuries, and mostly due to unbelievable mistakes in the defensive line.
Now, all this is frustrating for both the fans and the players, which is why the pressure appeared. Imagine their current situation. The first game following the restart and it is immediately “do or die” situation.
Tottenham has 41 points, four fewer than United, but also has Wolves and Sheffield United ahead of them, which makes an additional problem. Things won’t depend just on them and their results, and even if they win all the games until the end, the UCL spot is not guaranteed.
Manchester United (+145) also needs to collect all three points, otherwise, both the Blades and the Wolves could jump over them in the standings. The fans are hoping that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer solved all the problems in the locker room and that all those who weren’t happy enough are going to focus on the remaining part of the campaign.
United was in an excellent form before the entire chaos surrounding COVID-19 began, and they haven’t lost for eleven straight matches, with the note that in five from the last six, De Gea didn’t allow a single goal.
Latest News
Dele Alli is suspended for this event, with Mourinho openly criticizing the FA’s decision. Apart from him Foyth, Parrott, Tanganga are out for sure due to injuries, with Lo Celso questionable.
Among the Red Devils, we have two questionable players, Phil Jones, and Tuanzebe.
Head to Head Matches
United is much better when looking at the entire history, and has 92 wins. Tottenham recorded 52, and 48 clashes ended without winners.
The most recent saw United defeating Tottenham, 2-1. This one took place at the Old Trafford, on December 4, and Marcus Rashford scored both goals for the hosts, while Dele Alli netted one for the Spurs.
In general, United has three straight wins over this rival.
Prediction
This is going to be a hard and tactical match with both managers choosing a conservative approach to start the game. Solskjaer is always defending when on the road, trying to use Rashford and the rest of the guys in counter-attacks. Meanwhile, Mourinho will get a little boost with having Harry Kane on the field, but he too will be cautious. Moderate efficiency, meaning 2 or 3 goals, is the first choice in this one, with the moneyline at +100. The importance of the match will decrease the overall efficiency for sure.
