For the first time since his demotion, Eli Manning addressed to the public. And the Giants’ quarterback didn’t hesitate to admit that the new role isn’t suiting him well. However, he completely understands the situation and will do anything to help his team.
The news which shook the league yesterday was that the Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur announced that he plans to bench Manning and promote young Daniel Jones to the starting QB position against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Even though he is “disappointed” as he said, the 38-year old is ready to help his young teammate.
“I knew there was a possibility,” Manning said about this situation. “I said I’d handle it and support Daniel and be a good teammate.”
For quite some time, the two-time Super Bowl champions haven’t been playing well, and the stories about his replacement were one of the main topics of the Giants’ fans. A vast majority of them believed that even though he is a legend of the franchise, Manning should be replaced.

This is the sixth time in the previous seven years that the team opens the campaign with two losses. Also, according to the statistics, since the Giants won Super Bowl XLVI, Eli Manning is the QB with the most turnovers, interceptions, and losses in the NFL.
The player himself stated that he isn’t surprised that much as some might think. Jones was a first-round draft choice of the Giants, which means that he was projected to step in and take over the wheel.
“In some ways, I signed up for this knowing when you draft a young quarterback, this can happen,” Manning said. “And I gotta live with it, and make the best of it.”
But the younger of Manning brothers stated that this doesn’t have to mean anything, as there is still time until the end of the season. The situation could change, and he might be back in action.
“Who knows. I’m not dying and the season is not over. So, there is a lot to be a positive about and grateful for.”
Daniel Jones was Giants’ choice in this year’s draft. He was the 6th pick, coming out from Duke University where he spent three years playing 36 games and recording 8,201 yards. Many fans were not happy with his choice, but during the preseason, he has shown solid potential, posting 85.3% of completed passes.
The rookie stated that his older colleague continued to work with him as nothing happened and that he feels privileged for having the opportunity to work and learn under him.
“He was very supportive of me, and I can’t say enough about who he is as a person, as a teammate, and he’s been that way since I’ve gotten here.”

On the other side, Eli is with the Giants since 2004. He was the No.1 overall pick in that year’s draft and the cornerstone of the franchise new future. In all these years, besides the two Super Bowls, Manning was a two-time Super Bowl MVP, 4-time Pro Bowl, Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. He is also one of the few people who defeated Tom Brady in the Super Bowls, and the only who did it twice.
In the meantime, Eli became the franchise leader for most passing yards, touchdown passes and completed passes.
Yet, now it appears that he might face the same fate his predecessor in New York, Kurt Warner had. Back in 2004 he replaced the legendary QB and established himself as the leader of this franchise.
Jones’ first start is this Sunday against the Bucs.
