Cade Cunningham is this year’s No.1 pick in the NBA draft. The prolific guard was selected first by the Detroit Pistons, who are hoping for a better future with the talented player leading their franchise.
The former Oklahoma State star was the logical choice for the Pistons, who struggled for a long time with backcourt talent. Cunningham is a typical modern playmaker, with length and creativity resembling Ben Simmons’. However, he is a far better shooter and attacker than soon-to-be-traded Sixers’ guard.
Also, Cunningham is an excellent defender, capable of covering multiple positions due to his dominant athleticism. He scored 19.5 points with 4.5 boards and 3.5 steals while playing for Oklahoma State.
“Words can’t really explain the emotions … everybody is so happy, my family is all here. To be able to celebrate this moment with them, it’s a blessing,” the rookie stated. “I love it. Detroit, I’m all the way in. Detroit Pistons, I’m all the way in. Let’s do it.”
Jalen Green went second overall, with the shooting guard finishing in Houston Rockets. He was a part of the G League team Ignite, and was one of the better players in that competition, with 17.9 points.
According to the analysts, he will be able to contribute almost immediately on the offensive side of the court, having a versatile and lethal arsenal of weapons.
With John Wall and Christian Wood playing beside him, we just might see a meteoric rise of the franchise from Toyota Center.
Evan Mobley, the center from USC, was selected third by the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was what the team needed, as Cavs already have a formed backcourt duo, Collin Sexton and Darius Garland. On top of that, they picked Isaac Okoro last year, and J. B. Bickerstaff now has four top 10 picks in the lineup.
Small forward Scottie Barnes was fourth overall, heading for Toronto, which was a surprise because everyone believed that the Raptors would take Jalen Suggs, arguably the biggest star of the entire draft.
Suggs, Gonzaga Bulldogs’ leader, per many the most complete player in this class, will head for Orlando Magic, who had two picks inside the top 10 selections. Besides him, the Magic added Michigan’s small forward, Franz Wagner as well.
With these two guys, the franchise from Florida has enough to start a rebuild and be somewhat competitive, although they would need to add one top big man to bring the balance into the lineup.
Josh Giddey from Australia was sixth and is the biggest addition to the Oklahoma State Thunder, who had three first-round picks last night. The second is another international, Alperen Sengun, a fantastic Turkish center, who has massive talent. Tre Mann, a point guard from Florida, was the third player picked by Thunder in the first round. Sengun went 16th, and Mann two places lower.
Jonathan Kuminga, the power forward from Congo, was No.7 landing in Golden State Warriors, Davion Mitchell, No.9 and the new Sacramento Kings point guard, while Ziaire Williams from Stanford who went to New Orleans completes the top 10 picks.
Other notable names worth mentioning were Corey Kispert, Gonzaga’s forward who will play for the Washington Wizards, Quentin Grimes, LA Clippers’ 26th pick, and Luka Garza, Iowa’s center, who went 52nd overall, landing in Detroit besides Cunningham.
