Denver Broncos defeated the Atlanta Falcons in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. The clash which traditionally takes place in Canton, Ohio ended 14-10 in favor of the Broncos.
The key moment of the game was Trey Johnson’s interception on Matt Schaub’s pass with 5:21 left until the end. The 24-year old cornerback didn’t make any gain, but he created a perfect position for his team to begin the final attack.
Eventually, two rookies decided the contest. Brett Rypien luckily found Juwann Winfree, who caught a 15-yard pass and secured a victory for the Broncos in the first preseason NFL match.
“Trey made a nice play at the end, and Winfree made an acrobatic catch,” Vic Fangio, the Broncos’ head coach said. “It’s always good to be here for this game. It’s always great to be around great ex-players and owners.”
Denver drew the first blood in this meeting. With 8:50 until the end of the first quarter, Khalfani Muhammad 3-yard rush officially opened the new season of NFL football. He ended the game with 50 rushing yards on seven carries and 24 on four catches. Fangio wasn’t surprised to see the 25-year old ready this early.
“He’s got speed, and he’s elusive, and he’s a tough guy,” Fangio stated when asked about Muhammad’s performance. “Not surprised by that too much.”
But what needs to be said is that Atlanta looked much better until their starting QB in this match, Kurt Benker had to go out with a toe injury. On several occasions, this guy really showed potential and was looking very, very promising. He ended the match with 185 yards, throwing 19 for 34, making one TD pass. It was a 3-yard connection with Brian Hill and a finale of a 61-yard drive.
After that, the Falcons ended a drive 56 yards long, with Giorgio Tavecchio’s 27-yard field goal.
Atlanta’s head coach Dan Quinn was more impressed with the fact that his team participated in one Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.
“What an honor, number one to be a part of this weekend,” Quinn first stated at the press conference. He mentioned Benker’s performance, saying that he played well.
“Thought Kurt did a good job on a two-minute at the end of the half. That felt good and excellent,” Falcons’ head coach stressed out.

The Hall of Fame ceremony for the 2019 class took place before the start of the match. Several huge names were introduced, among them TE Tony Gonzales former Chiefs and Falcons and a 14-time Pro Bowl, CB Champ Baley who played for the Redskins and the Broncos, and was a 12-time Pro Bowl. Other names are Ed Reed, Ty Law, Kevin Mawae, Johnny Robinson, Gil Brandt, and late Pat Bowlen.
With this game, the NFL madness in the USA has started. From now until the Super Bowl LIV in Miami scheduled for February 2, there won’t be a week without NFL games.
The start of the regular season is set for September 5, with the Chicago Bears hosting the Green Bay Packers. This will be a 100th season of football in the United States.
In the meantime, both the Broncos and the Falcons will continue their preseason preparations. Denver travels to Seattle to face the Seahawks this Thursday, while on the same day, Atlanta heads for Miami to play against the Dolphins.
