Steph Curry exploded once again, having another 10+ three-point night, while dropping 40 points in the Warriors’ 111-105 win over the Orlando Magic.
This was the 13th match for Curry with 40 or more points and 10 or more threes, which is the most in the NBA history. Even though his Warriors are not in the top echelon, Steph is slowly becoming one of the biggest favorites for the MVP title, which would be his third. Though, at the moment, Curry isn’t willing to speak about that.
“The game speaks for itself,” he said. “I really try not to get distracted by that because it kind of taints the moment. If I do my job, I’ll be there at the end of the season.”
He was 10-for-19 for three, and 14-for-26 overall, with 8 rebounds and five assists, adding four steals. Overall, the Warriors shot OK for three dropping 20 long-distance hits in 50 attempts.
The hosts set up a tempo very quickly, reaching a double-digit advantage in the first period, 29-19. However, the Magic responded in the second sequence outscoring the Warriors 36-18, and making the game tight again. Visiting side reached the biggest lead of the game at the start of the second half, 58-47, but the Warriors quickly erased that.
After going back and forth, they would finally break the rivals’ resistance midway through the fourth, making a 19-3 run that sunk all the Magic’s hopes of reaching a positive result.
Andre Wiggins had 21 points and seven rebounds, with three blocks, shooting solid, 8-for-13. Kelly Oubre added 17 and 10 rebounds with four assists, while, Mychal Mulder scored 11 off the bench. That was all from the Warriors’ double-digit scorers. Draymond Green was all-around as usual, with 8 buckets, 11 assists, and six boards.
The second pick from this year’s draft, James Wiseman, didn’t play because of his sprained left wrist.
. “He’s getting individual workouts without much contact with the ball,” GSW’s head coach Steve Kerr said. “If he were to re-injure it, you’re lengthening the time he has pain. … The wrist is healing well.”
Nikola Vucevic posted another double-double, with 25 points and 13 boards with 5 assists. The center from Montenegro, played 38 minutes, making 8 of his 23 shots. Dwayne Bacon scored 20, adding four threes, while Terrence Ross scored 20 in 41 minutes. James Ennis III also added a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards. The Magic didn’t have a good night with overall shooting, making just 38 of their 97 attempts.
Right now, they are 13th in the East, four games behind the 8th placed Atlanta Hawks. In order to reach the playoffs, the Magic will need to make big changes, including some trades. They don’t have too many assets, which is why many believe that they might enter the complete reconstruction already this year. That would include shipping Nikola Vucevic in exchange for some wealthy return.
Up next, Orlando doesn’t have too much time for resting as they visit the Sacramento Kings already tomorrow, and after that, head for Glendale to play against the Phoenix Suns.
The Warriors have three more matches at home, against the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Miami Heat. After that, they hit the road for a four-game journey that starts in Orlando, vs. Magic.
Regarding the match against the Nets, many are wondering will Kevin Durant appear. He is still under health and safety protocols, and won’t be playing against his former team.
