One of the best female fighters of all times, Cris Cyborg decided to sign a contract with Bellator MMA. The Brazilian native didn’t want to be a part of UFC anymore and chose to skip all the talks with Dana White, becoming a part of the rival organization.
Bellator’s president, Scott Coker, has revealed that Cyborg’s contract is the biggest ever for one female fighter. This will be their reunion as two already worked together in the past at Strikeforce.
The contract is for the next three years, and apart from that, all other details are not revealed. Coker was extremely pleased because Cris Justino, which is her real name, will be once again on his team.
“Cyborg is the most dominant female fighter in the history of the sport, and she will be a perfect fit here at Bellator, where champion Julia Budd and the other women that make up best female featherweight division in the world have eagerly awaited her arrival,” said Bellator’s director.
Meanwhile, after having many problems with UFC’s president Dana White, and several other figures there like Joe Rogan, Cyborg will finally have a chance to once again fully commit to fighting. She and White have had several disputes over the recent few months, and it all resulted in White’s decision not to extend the contract with one of the most famous UFC’s fighters ever.
Insults and according to her words, diminishing of her success and name were the reason for Justino to demand a public apology from White, but eventually, all she got was a release from the UFC. But it seems that this development of the situation didn’t disturb the 34-year old Brazilian. She feels ready to cope with new challenges and has already set a new goal for her future.
“My goal is to become the only female fighter to hold four different major titles in the same division,” said Cyborg, who has already a featherweight champion in the UFC, Strikeforce and Invicta FC.
Her fantastic reign in UFC was ended in a not so good way. As we said, all the problems with White and the contract were just a tip of the iceberg. What cast a shadow on her superb career was a knockout defeat against Amanda Nunes, who smashed Cyborg in the first round of UFC 232.
That loss snapped her 20-win streak, which lasted for 13 years. During that time, Justino was the absolute ruler of the MMA as she recorded 17 KOs in those 20 victories. Her legacy was massive, and all those ruthless wins have made her a popular figure in the fighting world. After losing to Nunes, she would bounce back against Felicia Spencer, but that didn’t change anything regarding her future at UFC.
According to Cyborg, she wanted a rematch with Nunes, and a chance to regain the belt. Also, it wasn’t all about the title, as Justino wanted to defend her reputation and try to get even with Lioness. But on the other hand, Dana White claimed that she avoided the clash with the new champion insisting that Cyborg might be scared of another failure. That just created more tensions between the fighter and White, and even then it was obvious that the two sides won’t work together anymore.
There weren’t any talks about the future fights in Bellator, but many are predicting to see Cyborg in action pretty soon. Once that happens, we will be there to cover.
