The all-American NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants put up an excellent show last night at the MetLife Stadium. The guests from Texas got back home with a victory, defeating the Giants, 23-16.
It was another win for the Cowboys’ backup quarterback, Cooper Rush, and another in which he leads his team in making a comeback, proving that, for the moment, Mike McCarthy doesn’t have to worry about the QB position, despite Dak Prescott’s injury.
Rush had 215 passing yards for a touchdown, not making a single turnover. Also, he didn’t suffer a single sack, which is why he credited the teammates from the O-line following the event. Though, he, too, was rational, not making any unnecessary moves.
Rush’s primary target was CeeDee Lamb, who caught eight passes for 87 yards and a TD but also had a chance to record a spectacular 50+yard TD. The former first-round receiver dropped what should have been an easy catch but recovered, posting a one-handed TD reception which lifted the Cowboys to 20-13. Besides that, he had a couple of key plays in the late part of the game, and we can say that he pushed the guests towards triumph.
“It was a situation I had to deal with on my own. Obviously I’m the one that dropped the ball for the guys,” Lamb said. “So knowing that I had to make this up in the back end of the game, I just wanted to step up.”
Ezekiel Elliott got the second TD for the Cowboys, whose ground game was perfect. Elliot ran 73 yards on 15 carries, while Tony Pollard racked up 105 yards on 13 snaps. McCarthy was very pleased with how his running back played in this one.
On the other side, the Giants were also very good on the ground, with Saquon Barkley rushing for 81 yards and a score, while Daniel Jones had 79 yards on nine scrambles.
Though, Jones wasn’t very good in his primary assignment, which was passing, where he completed only 20 of 37 passing attempts, without touchdowns and with one pick. He was also sacked five times.
“Didn’t get it quite done tonight,” Daboll said. “They made more plays than we did. Give them credit.”
Overall, this was a close game, with both teams having pretty much the same numbers in stats. It turned out that Rush decided the contest with his more accurate passing, while Jones couldn’t find his rhythm. To make things even worse, the Giants lost their top receiver, WR Sterling Shepard, who picked up an injury on the final offensive drive. The initial prognosis is not okay, and he will probably miss the season.
Shepard was dealing with an Achilles injury last year and was expected to be one of the key players in Brian Daboll’s strategy in this campaign.
Next, the Giants are hosting the Chicago Bears next Sunday, their third straight game at home. After that, they head to Green Bay to meet the Packers at Lambeau.
On the other side, the Cowboys keep wrestling with the division rivals, as Washington Commanders visit Texas on Sunday. Following that matchup, Rush, Lamb, and the boys have two extremely tough challenges, the first on the road in LA against the Super Bowl champions, the Rams, and Philadelphia against the Eagles.Cowboys
