The Los Angeles Chargers lost to Kansas City Chiefs and probably terminated their playoff hopes regarding this season. Once Daniel Sorensen intercepted Philip Rivers’ pass with 18 seconds to go in the fourth period, many of the Chargers’ fans realized that.
With the result 24-17, the Chargers had one last chance to get the overtime, at least, and an opportunity for turning the tables at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. However, all that faded away after Rivers’ fourth interception of the game. It was second-and-10 at KC’s 14, with the Chargers’ QB aiming Austin Ekeler in the end zone. However, Sorensen intercepted the toss, getting a touchback and closing up this one.
“Not scoring in the red zone, and turned it over man, that’s gets you beaten, that is what gets us beaten all year,” said Rivers at the press.
It was his fourth interception of the game, with the note that the Chargers final two drives ended with picks by the Chiefs defense. Previously, Rashad Fenton brought back the football to his team, with 4:10 to play until the end.
“I was real proud of our defense for the job that they did,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Four takeaways, so for the guys that intercepted the football and then helped create the turnovers, I’m proud of those guys.”

The way it started, it seemed that the Chargers are going to win. Their first drive of the game concluded in Michael Badgley’s 27-yard field goal, and after that, the team from LA quickly stopped KC, taking the ball away from them and having another attack. And again, everything was looking ok, until Badgley missed a 40-yard field goal.
The Chargers’ defense was up to the task in those moments, holding the rivals restrained and without any chance of scoring or at least getting in the FG range. Rayshawn Jenkins picked Mahomes, making this one of the worst quarters for the Chiefs this season.
“They played lights out all game long,” Mahomes said about his teammates from the defensive team.”It is a team game, and it’s good to see these guys win a game for us.”
But then everything changed as the second period began. Rivers threw two picks; the Chiefs got the lead through LeSean McCoy, who rushed for 6 yards, and Andy Reid’s boys were looking more dangerous from that moment on.
The Chargers kept the pace by scoring two field goals, but all that was gone after KC’s fantastic opener of the second half. It seemed that the break suited them very well, with Mahomes and the guys flying into the third sequence. The reigning MVP led his team to back-to-back touchdown drivers, which saw them pulling away to 24-9.
With 1:44 to go in the same, Keenan Allen caught Rivers’ 7-yard pass, and the Chargers went for a two-point conversion, which was successful. Despite being one TD away from OT, LA couldn’t escape from a loss this Monday night. It was their fifth straight loss on Monday Night Football, with only the Washington Redskins having more at this point, 8.
Rivers had 353 yards, but with just 28 completed passes in 52 yards, for one TD and 4 interceptions. His favorite target was Ekeler, who had 108 yards on 8 catches, while Mike Williams had two superb receptions on 50, and the other 26 yards long. Allen ended the night with 71, while Hunter Henry had two fewer. Melvin Gordon posted jut 69 rushing yards on 14 carries.
“I mean it’s only way I know, is to fight… just keep fighting. Sign up for them all, regardless what your record is. We’ve been in this spot before, you just keep playing,” LA’s quarterback told.
On the other side, Mahomes had a quiet game for his standards, 182 yards, 19 for 32, and one touchdown and interception apiece. Chiefs’ QB was also rushing for 59 yards on five carries and was the best among his team.
Travis Kelce and one TD and 92 receiving yards, while the next best thing was McCoy with 28. Tyrann Mathieu, Daniel Sorrensen, Derrick Nnadi also added an interception.
The Chiefs (7-4) are first in the AFC West, but with a game in hand over the Oakland Raiders, whom they meet at home in the next round. After that, Andy Reid and the boys head for Foxborough to face the Patriots.
Meanwhile, the Chargers (4-7) are far away from the playoff hunt, and they have two road games coming up for them. The first against the Broncos in Denver, and after that, versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.
