The Chicago Bears declined a fifth-year option on their starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky. It basically means that Bears’ No.10 will become a free agent following the next season.
“The #Bears are declining the fifth-year option on QB Mitch Trubisky, source said,” wrote Tom Pelissero on his Twitter account. “The team has liked Trubisky’s attitude since the Nick Foles trade, and it’ll be an open competition. A chance for Trubisky to make himself a lot of money before his contract expires next March.”

He will earn $4.4 million this year, and take $9.2 million in the salary cap.
According to the majority of the experts, this was apparent for a long time. The former second pick from the 2017 draft was simply below all the expectations put in front of him. Chicago, who is one of the best teams in the league, failed to reach its full potential because of Trubisky, who displayed mediocre performances during his stint here.
In the moments when the Bears needed him the most, the young quarterback failed to deliver. He was among the worse passers in the league during the 2019 campaign, with only 17 TD passes, 3,138 passing yards, QBR of 39.4, and only 6.1 yards per pass.
His Bears failed to enter the playoffs after posting 8 wins and losses each during the regular part of the season. The year before, they went 12-4, and reached the Divisional Round where they lost to the Eagles. Following the solid year, he was invited to the Pro Bowl, but even then, the majority believed that his numbers are there mostly because of the team’s quality. Chicago had fantastic defense, arguably the best in the league, which covered up many flaws seen on the offense.
Right now, the 25-year old is in the recovery process after he had a surgery of torn labrum this January. According to all the medical evaluations, he should be 100% fit until the summer. This injury might have been the reason for his poor performances this year, as he picked it up in Week 4 against Minnesota. The good thing was that it happened to his left shoulder, not the right, throwing one.

The Bears brought Nick Foles at the start of the free agency. In return, they would send a fourth-round compensatory pick to Jacksonville. Foles and his new team restructured the deal in order to make some space in the salary cap, and the player now has the opportunity to leave the team after the end of this year.
Although many believed that the Bears are bringing Foles to fight for the starting position in the team, after today’s news, it wouldn’t be odd to see the former Super Bowl MVP as a starter in Week 1 once the season starts.
The Bears don’t have the luxury to wait anymore, and they have to make good results next season; otherwise, this generation would pretty soon fall apart. Waiting for Trubisky to evolve turned out to be a bad decision. That is why Chicago turned its attention towards the already formed and experienced player, like Foles, who knows how to win the trophy.
Just to remind you, Foles led the Eagles to a win over the Patriots in the Super Bowl LI, winning the MVP award, and becoming the hero of the franchise.
