Chelsea defeated Liverpool in the FA Cup clash tonight, 2-0, inflicting the Reds their third defeat in the last four matches across all competitions. The game at Stamford Bridge was very dynamic, and the fans had a chance to see an excellent battle.
Scorers for the hosts were Willian and Ross Barkley. With this victory, the mood at Stamford Bridge radically improved, because Blues can still capture at least one trophy this season.
“It was brilliant, a massive result for the lads. We needed a top performance tonight at home after two disappointing results,” said Barkley, who was happy because of a goal. The former Everton player added that his past and feelings for the Toffees only increased the joy after today’s hit.
“Scoring against Liverpool is massive for me. As an Everton fan, it’s always a dream to score against them.”
The first half brought a spectacle. The spectators saw a lot of intensity, clashes, chances, but just one goal. The visitors from Anfield had an opportunity to strike first. Antonio Rudiger’s clearance struck Minamino, and the ball eventually reached Sadio Mane. However, the Senegalese missed a good chance to score.
Only three minutes later, the home team responded, with Cesar Azpillicueta’s attempt following a corner. The Blues continued to pressure the back line of Liverpool’s side and, eventually, that produced results.
At first, Adrian miraculously saved Willian’s shot, but a few seconds later, he made a terrible reaction, allowing the ball to finish behind his back. The Brazilian sent a shot from some 20 yards, and L’Pool’s goalkeeper misjudged the trajectory of the ball, allowing it to hit him and deflect into the net.
Ferocious attacks on both sides followed this score, and Liverpool unleashed a heavy offensive towards Kepa’s net. Yet, the Spaniard was unbeaten. That was pretty much all from the first half.
It was the 62nd minute when Mount hit the crossbar, and a few minutes later, Barkley doubled the lead. He led one counter-attack, beating Adrian without any issues.

Chelsea could have scored a few more goals, but Pedro and Mount failed to beat pale Adrian. On the other side, Klopp tried to wake up his players and even sent Firmino, Millner, and Salah on the pitch, but that didn’t bring any results.
“I’m really proud. Liverpool are the best team in the league and what they are doing is incredible. So for us to put in a performance like that, the effort, the quality was something special,” said Frank Lampard to the journalists after the game.
This is a huge boost of morale for the Blues following a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth last weekend, and especially after a 0-3 trashing at home to Bayern Munich. That match really shook the team, and particularly the fans who were upset.
On the other side, Liverpool played the third game in a row in which they couldn’t score. Now, that is something worrying for Klopp, because his team has massive challenges coming up. The first one is reaching a one-goal deficit against Atletico Madrid in the rematch of the Champions League’s Round of 16.
The form of the Reds dropped in the worst possible moment, and they need to find a way to improve that, otherwise, they might lose the European crown. And according to the voices from the organization, it would be a disastrous scenario for the team.
