Carlos Vela and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are putting on a show with their race for the MLS top goalscorer award. Both guys netted once this Wednesday, pushing their teams to success.
It was an excellent night for the LA-based sides. Both LAFC and Galaxy have posted wins and reached their desired goals. LAFC has defeated Houston Dynamo and won the Supporters’ Shield, while on the other side, Galaxy has secured the playoffs.
The atmosphere at the Banc of California Stadium was celebrational. Nobody cared about the result as much as about the Supporters’ Shield ceremony. Also, nobody believed in Houston’s upset, not after five games in a row in which the home team hasn’t won. In its second year of existence, LAFC landed a major trophy, none other than the one for the best team in the regular part of the season.
Carlos Vela and his teammates are far from done for this campaign because they have a chance to set a new points record if they win in the remaining two matches. If it weren’t for the recent slowdown, we are sure that this generation would have set the standards way up high for those to come.
The Mexican magician who is still competing with Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the top goalscorer award was the one to score first in this event. He converted a penalty after Aljaz Struna brought down Brian Rodriguez in the box. It was his 30th goal of the season, and has two more than the Swedish international.
Dynamo responded shortly in the 28th minute. The LAFC’s goalkeeper Tyler Miller made a massive mistake, after a corner kick, not catching the ball, which deflected off of him and hit the back of the net. This result was active up until the 70th minute when Diego Rossi brought the lead back to the hosts with a nice header from a nearby. LAFC was pressuring Dynamo throughout the entire second half, and it was just a matter of time before they score.
And a few minutes before the end, we saw the most attractive moment of the game. Eduard Atuesta netted from a free-kick, perfectly taken, to close out this glorious night in LA.
Next game is the derby against Minnesota away from home. LAFC finishes its regular season campaign with homestand versus Colorado.
Meanwhile, in Salt Lake, Zlatan Ibrahimovic led his Galaxy to another win, the one which clinched the playoffs for them. Ibra scored a goal and assisted one for Cristian Pavon in a 1-2 victory of the guests. It is the first time since 2016 that Galaxy enters the playoffs, and the first one for Ibrahimovic.
Following a goalless first half, just five minutes into the second part of the match, the visitors struck. Ibrahimovic headed the ball to Pavon who didn’t have any troubles of beating Real’s goalkeeper Nick Rimando. Guest’s head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto wa very pleased the way Pavon played and worked with Ibra.
“Cristian was big not just in the result, but the result of how we play,” LA Galaxy boss said after the win. “We can keep the ball more high in the offensive area and today he was wonderful.”
In the 80th minute, the roles were changed, and Pavon assisted Ibrahimovic, who routinely executed. Until the end of the game, Nedum Onuoha decreased the lead of the Galaxy with a rebound goal following one long-distance shot.
Right now, LA Galaxy is third in the West with 51 points, one fewer than the second-placed Minnesota United and four more than Real at place No.4. In the remaining two rounds they fae Vancouver Whitecaps at home, and travel to Houston to meet Dynamo in the last round.
