Cam Newton reportedly joined the New England Patriots, on a one-year deal the sources are saying.
Late this Sunday the news broke out that the former MVP is about to land in New England, and that the two sides reached an agreement for one year.
“Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has reached agreement on a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the New England Patriots, league sources tell @mortreport and me,” Adam Schefter wrote on his Twitter account.

Newton now will step into the mix to try to help replace former Patriots’ QB Tom Brady.

The player himself wrote on his Instagram account, something which definitely proved all the stories.
“I’m excited as I don’t know what right now. All praise to God. Dropping content tomorrow. I hope you are ready. Let’s go Pats.”
This came just after the rumors started to circulate, and afterward, the NFL insiders reached more information. Some of them are suggesting that the deal which is about to be signed is an incentive-laden, meaning that the team is going to pay Newton in accordance with his performances and the performances of the Patriots themselves.
So it basically means that the former Carolina Panthers’ superstar and the franchise face decided to fight for the contract and for his future as the starting quarterback. According to the majority of the experts, Super Cam could easily find himself a deal as a backup QB, a long-term one. Still, in this case, he was willing to pass all the “safe” offers and to sacrifice one year (in financial terms) and put everything on a gamble, so that he might show everyone that his time didn’t pass.
Newton now has to a massive motivation to play the best he can, The Pats are in desperate need of a replacement for Tom Brady, and they are willing to give it a try with the 31-year old. On the other hand, QB will have a respectable team, better than the one in Carolina, which opens him a door for a sparkling comeback on the scene, after a turbulent and frustrating period in Charlotte over the previous two years.
Bill Belichick and his organization are in a solid position too. They have the former MVP, who, although isn’t tested for a long time, seems fit, and is definitely much better than their current players on the QB position – Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham.

If he fails to meet the expectations, the Pats won’t need to pay him too much, while on the other side, if Newton reaches his old form or at least 75% of it, they would have a long-term solution for Brady’s replacement.
Newton had several injuries over the previous three years, and he underwent shoulder surgery recently, after being forced to miss 14 games in the 2019 campaign. After that, the Panthers decided to move on from him and the head coach Ron Rivera, which pretty much disappointed the player, who was in the process of the rehabilitation once released.
From time to time, he would comment on the overall situation, and he even accused the franchise from North Carolina that they deliberately delayed his releasement in order to narrow his options.
Newton was a 2015 NFL MVP, the same year when he led the Panthers to the Super Bowl. They would lose to the Denver Broncos in the title game. Apart from that, Newton was the No.1 pick at the 2011 NFL draft, a Rookie of the Year, and a three-time Pro Bowler. He broke numerous records since entering the league, and also set the majority of the franchise records for QBs while playing for Carolina.
