The Cincinnati Bengals have defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday Nigth Football with Evan McPherson’s 35-yard field goal as time ran out. The final result of this game was 24-21 for the home team, who now has three wins and one loss.
After a sluggish start, the Bengals shifted into a higher gear in the third period, leveling the score at 14-all, but the stubborn Jags managed to hit back at them some half a minute into the final quarter.
Burrow and the guys once again responded, through CJ Uzomah, who caught a 31-yard pass to bring back the Bengals into the match. Jacksonville took the ball but couldn’t go very far with it, having to punt.
In the next 5:33, the Bengals were in motion, having ten plays to win 73 yards. Burrow was focused and rational, which eventually gave the Bengals a perfect chance to seal a big victory, the one that boosts their morale ahead of the remaining part of the campaign. McPherson was ice-cold, and the celebration at the Paul Brown stadium started.
“Joe is just seeing the field really well right now. You just kind of put it in his hands,” Bengals’ head coach Zac Taylor said about Burrow following the game.
Last year’s no.1 pick ended the night with 348 yards and two touchdown passes, being sacked just once and completing 25 of his 32 passing attempts.
Both of his scoring plays ended with CJ Uzomah getting the football in the end zone. He had five catches for 95, while Tyler Boyd had 118 yards in nine receptions. Ja’Marr Chase ended the night with 77 yards, one of them 44 yards long.
Joe Mixon put his name in the scoring column with one TD, and 67 rushing yards on 16 carries.
On the other side, Trevor Lawrence had 204 passing yards, 17-for-24, without an interception or a touchdown. He would run the ball eight times and post 36 yards, also entering the end zone once. James Robinson continued to play well, having 18 rushes for 78 yards and two touchdowns. With him at the level, the Jags will get a reliable weapon for the years to come.
Laviska Shenault was one yard short of 100, but the next best receiver in Jacksonville had just 29 yards, Dan Arnold.
The Jags’ head coach, Urban Meyer, was very unhappy following the game.
“It’s devastating. Heartbreaking,” Meyer said. “I just see a good team in there. I see good guys. I see good hearts. I see guys that work, and I told them I’m not wrong. I’m not wrong about that stuff.”
Jags had a chance to take a 21-0 lead in the second period, but failed to convert fourth-and-goal from a one-yard line. That proved to be the crucial moment of the game.
This is their 19th defeat in a row, and fourth this year. To make things even worse, they lost WR DJ Chark Jr. to a fractured left ankle and the right guard AJ Cann who had a knee injury.
Up next, they head back home to Florida to meet the Tennessee Titans, and after that, to meet with the state rivals, the Miami Dolphins.
Meanwhile, the Bengals host the Green Bay Packers in their next match, and then travel to Michigan to face another NFC North team, the Detroit Lions.
