First-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide have demolished the reigning CFP champions, LSU Tigers, while Clemson Tigers easily routed Virginia Tech Hokies.
No.1 Alabama was ruthless against LSU, beating the champs, 55-17, with Mac Jones in the leading role. The Crimson Tide quarterback threw for 385 yards and four touchdown passes, three of them to DeVonta Smith.
‘Bama would destroy LSU scoring 45 points in the first halftime, which is only the third time over the last 15 years to see one SEC team dropping that many points until the break. On all three occasions, Crimson Tide was that team.
So far, Jones has emerged as the biggest candidate for winning the Heisman Trophy, as not only made his team perfect so far with nine wins without any losses, but has the best QBR in Division I, 96.4, with 23 TDs and three picks so far.
A vast majority of his passing yards last night went to DeVonta Smith, who was unstoppable for LSU’s defense. Smith ended the night with 231 yards on 8 catches and three scores. Najee Harris ran 21 times, posting three touchdowns and 145 yards, breaking the host’s defensive line.
Crimson Tide had a huge motive for inflicting such a nasty loss to the Tigers at their own ground, and head coach Nick Saban told that before the start of the game.
“LSU beat us last year, they probably have some confidence that they can play well against Alabama, so we’re going to have to change the way they think when it comes to that as well.”
It seems that his players took this message seriously and that they wanted to show the power and make a statement. LSU scored just one TD and that was Jontre Kirklin’s catch.
Alabama hits the road again, visiting Arkansas, while LSU goes to play against No.6 Florida Gators.
Meanwhile, one other guy who already won the title, and who wants to repeat that, Trevor Lawrence, led his team to a confident victory. Clemson Tigers are coming back home with a win over Virginia Tech Hokies, 45-10
The future no.1 pick at the NFL draft (if everything goes well until then) didn’t have a stellar performance when looking at his numbers, throwing just 195 yards for one TD and one interception, but he carried the football into the end zone twice.
“It just makes people honest. Even if they load the box. The ability to read that defender on the end of the line of scrimmage puts pressure on the edge. It just opens a lot of things up,” said Tigers’ head coach Dabo Swinney.
No.3 Clemson picked up the pace following the break, delivering 28 straight points without allowing a single one.
Unlike in previous matches, RB Travis Etienne was below his usual standards with just 66 rushing yards on 16 snaps and without a TD. Darien Rencher had one rush for 50 yards that saw him bringing the football to the endzone. Cornell Powell added one receiving TD, along with 90 yards on four receptions.
With this win, the Tigers have secured themselves another ACC Championship game, for the sixth year in a row. They are to meet Notre Dame in Charlotte, which is a perfect chance for Clemson to avenge their only defeat this year.
Back on November 8, Notre Dame won after two OTs, 47-40, but Swinney’s guys appeared without Lawrence in that one, as he tested positive for COVID-19. With him in the lineup, things are no doubt going to be much different.
