After a tough and unpleasant first period, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a big comeback to defeat the Miami Dolphins on this Monday Night Football, 27-14. It is the third win for Mike Tomlin’s guys who still have chances to reach the playoffs.
The Steelers allowed the guests from Florida to take a 14-0 lead after the first period and weren’t looking good at all against arguably the worst crew in the league. Their offense had some problems at the start of the game and wasn’t very efficient in the opening period. On his second snap of the night, Mason Rudolph threw an interception, and on the next drive, the hosts couldn’t convert fourth-and-6, handing the ball over to the Dolphins. On both occasions, Miami scored a touchdown on the following possession.
Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a 5-yard pass to Albert Wilson with 4:05 into the match for the first score. Approximately 1:34 before the end of the opening sequence, Fitzmagic connected with Allen Hurns for a 12-yard TD.
Once the Steelers stopped Dolphins’ surge, they managed to make a quick comeback before the end of the halftime. Chris Boswell scored a 42-yard field goal with 2:49 before the break, but that was not all.
“You dig a big of a whole there in the first half and I was proud of the way we responded,” Rudolph said.
The former Dolphin, Minkah Fitzpatrick intercepted Miami’s quarterback in the late part of the second, giving a chance to his team to completely neutralize the big lead of the guests, which they did. Mason Rudolph tossed a 45-yard touchdown pass to Diontae Johnson just 17 seconds before the halftime whistle.
It was the turning point of this match, and a signal for the home team fans to become louder and hostile towards the visitors from Florida.
Pittsburgh had the first possession in the second half, and Boswell missed a field goal. However, the defense once again stepped up and 20 seconds later got back the ball, as Minkah Fitzpatrick got his second interception of the night. It seems that free safety had a lot of motives to show his qualities against the team which drafted him last year. As you all remember, he forced his way out of Miami when requesting a trade, and ended up in Pennsylvania.
Rudolph took over at the Steelers’ three-yard line and led the hosts all the way to the endzone. He executed by throwing a 26-yard pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster.
It was finally the moment when hosts took the first lead of the game.
From that moment on, it was all about the Steelers at the Heinz Field. Their defense forced two fumbles, defended fourth downs on two occasions, and was unmatchable for the poor Dolphins.
Meanwhile, fantastic James Conner decided to put his name on the scoreboard, with a 9-yard rush into the endzone. Steelers’ running back had 145 rushing yards on 23 carries and was probably the best player among the hosts.

JuJu Smith-Schuster had another solid night, with 103 receiving yards on 5 catches; Diontae Johnson had 84 from five receptions. Rudolph had 251 yards, 20 for 36 with 2 touchdowns, one interception, and a fumble.
“Good to get Mason back,” said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. “He knocked a little rust off and got going, found some rhythm. He gave guys opportunity to make plays, and guys made those plays on one-on-one circumstances.”
On the other side, Ryan Fitzpatrick slowed down after a brilliant start. The veteran journeyman had 190 yards, completing 21of his 34 passes for 2 touchdowns and interceptions each. He also had two fumbles, one recovered and one lost, suffering four sacks.
Miami’s rushing game was terrible, as the guests recorded just 60 yards on the ground. Mark Walton had 11 carries for 35 yards and a fumble. The situation wasn’t very shiny with receiving. Devante Parker was the best among the hosts with 59 yards on 6 receptions.
“We just have to continue to keep fighting,” Ryan Fitzpatrick said. “That’s just kind of the place that we’re at right now. Just continue to keep fighting, continue to keep going to practice and trying to get better every single day.”
The Dolphins, who are 0-7 at the moment, might have an opportunity to post their first win of the season next week when they host the New York Jets.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh 3-4, has one of the crucial games of the season coming up, against the Indianapolis Colts. It is a game they simply have to win.
