Patrick Mahomes will be out only for three weeks. That is the latest news after today’s MRI exam the reigning MVP had. It is something just a few hoped for, especially because the injury looked much severe when it happened.
According to one of the most prominent NFL insiders Ian Rapoport, Mahomes suffered far less damage on his knee than the initial prognosis indicated.
“The MRI has confirmed the #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap, but not significant additional damage, sources tell me and @JamesPalmerTV,” Rapoport wrote on his Twitter account. “He’ll seek additional opinions to be sure. The plan is for him to return this season after a brief absence.”

At first, many believed that the season is over for the Chiefs leader and that once again, their team isn’t going to reach the Super Bowl despite having an excellent crew. However, a three-week absence is bearable for Andy Ried’s unit, and if everything goes well, Mahomes could enter the postseason in the best possible shape.
Another NFL insider, Adam Schefter, tweeted briefly after Rapoport, saying that the current situation is the best possible for Mahomes.
“Patrick Mahomes’ MRI was, in the words of a league source, “good,” and it “turned out to be a best-case scenario.” Prior to MRI, team believed best-case scenario was Mahomes missing “about three games,” wrote on Schefter’s account.
The players picked up an injury in the second period of Chiefs’ clash against the Denver Broncos in Colorado this Thursday. He wanted to make a quarterback sneak but unfortunately picked up what could have been much worse injury than this.
At first sight, and when looking at the reaction of other players on the field, it seemed that Mahomes might have hurt his knee pretty bad. Some were even speculation that his ligaments were torn, which would mean at least six months of absence. Luckily that wasn’t the case, and the NFL MVP for the previous season is going to come back much sooner.

Mahomes was on his way to repeating the stats from the last campaign. In six games, he threw 2,180 yards and had 15 touchdown passes along with just one interception. Against the Broncos, the Chiefs’ QB had only one incompleted pass in 11 attempts, for 76 yards and one TD.
Matt Moore, the 35-year old veteran who plays his 12th season in the NFL, will replace Mahomes. Against the Broncos, he had quite a solid role tossing for one touchdown and recording 117 yards, 10 for 19.
Although he wasn’t a starter throughout his career, Moore is an experienced player who knows how to handle these situations. His best season was in 2011 after arriving in Miami from Carolina. Back then, he played 13 games and had 210 completions in 347 attempts for 2,497 yards and 16 TDs. He also had 9 interceptions.
Chiefs will have a tough schedule while Mahomes recovers from his injury. The good thing is that the first two matches are at home. The bad is that they face the red-hot Packers and the Minnesota Vikings who are in a must-win situation. After that, they travel to Nashville to play against the Titans, who are not very shiny this season. In case Mahomes’ recovery slows down somewhere, and he has to skip one more game, that would be the one in LA against the Chargers.
All in all, Ried and the Chiefs would be very pleased with two wins from these four contests. That would keep them in the playoff race, and wouldn’t hurt the postseason ambitions.
As for Mahomes, we wish him the fastest possible recovery.
