With a little luck and with the magic delivered by Russell Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks have defeated the LA Rams. The opening match of Week 5 ended with a tight win of Pete Carroll’s guys, 30-29.
Greg Zuerlein missed a 44-yard field goal just 11 seconds before the end, thus handing a win to the home team. But all of this wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for Wilson who had the best game of the season so far, and according to Carroll, one of the best in his career.
“I thought Russell played one of the best games I’ve ever seen him play,” Seattle’s head coach stated.
The former MVP threw four touchdown passes, had 17 completions in 23 attempts, without a single interception, and rushed for 32 yards on 8 carries. Throughout the game, Wilson has been showcasing what would be the perfect game for one quarterback.
“That’s something that you can’t really teach, either you got it, or you don’t,” Seattle’s WR Tyler Lockett spoke about Wilson’s skills. “That is something that people try to teach, but he already incorporated it in his game a long time ago.”
The Rams opened the game with two field goals before Lockett’s 13-yard touchdown changed things on the field of the CenturyLink Field. Throughout the midpoint of the second period, Willson threw a 40-yard pass to the rookie DK Metcalf, but the guests from Los Angeles responded just 6 seconds before the end of the halftime. It was Cooper Kupp, who posted a first TD for the Rams.
Todd Gurley was clinical in the third, and with two of his touchdown rushes, the Rams finally created some distance, as they allowed just one TD in that part of the game. Early on in the fourth, both sides traded with one field goal, but it was Seattle who scored a touchdown with 2:28 left in the game through Chris Carson. It was fourth-and-goal for the Seahawks, who decided to go all or nothing in this case, and got the reward.
Just 10 seconds after that Gerals Evertt, Rams’ TE didn’t catch the pass, which ended in Tedric Thompson’s possession, after an acrobatic move of the Seattle’s safety, who juggled with the ball while lying on the ground before catching it.
Though, the Rams got the ball back only 30 seconds later, it definitely slowed down the guests, who had to settle with a field goal after reaching the 28-yard line in Seattle’s territory. If it weren’t for Thompson’s pass, things would be much worse for the hosts.
Zuerlein couldn’t hit his fourth straight field goal today, and the win stayed in Seattle. Rams’ head coach Sean McVay didn’t allow for the press to blame his kicker, saying that this is just one failure and that many forget how many times Zuerlein had brought a win for his crew.
“It’s one kick. He’s made a lot of big kicks for us. He’s going to continue to make a lot of big kicks for us,” Rams coach Sean McVay said.
Jared Goff had 395 yards, one touchdown, and interception each, but with a bad percentage 29 of 49. Gurley scored two TDs but had just 51 yards on 15 carries, but he also had a fumble for the first time since Week 3 last season. Kupp had 117 yards on 9 receptions. Everett recorded the most, 136 in 7 catches.
“We’ve been 3-2 before, and made the playoffs two years ago. If I remember correctly, the Patriots were 3 and 2 last year and won the Super Bowl,” said Goff at the press when the reporters asked him about the current record of this team.
On the other side, Carson rushed for 118 yards on 27 carries. Will Dissly had 4 receptions for 81 yards and Locket 51 also in 4 catches.
Up next, the Seahawks who now have 4 wins and one loss are heading for Ohio to meet with the Cleveland Browns. After that, they have a home game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Rams (3-2) have a state derby against the San Francisco 49ers, and following that head for Georgia to face the Atlanta Falcons.
