The whole city of Dallas is anxiously waiting for the next Sunday. Of course, it is like that whenever the Cowboys play. But this occasion is a bit more important, as the biggest franchise in the world has a playoff clash against the team who already defeated them this season.
It was Week 3, and the Seahawks used the home ground advantage by defeating the guests from Texas 24-13. Things changed dramatically since then.
Seattle became one of the best defensive teams in the league, and their running game is, in fact, the best. On the other side, Dallas’ performances are without parallel much better now than three and a half months ago.
Russell Wilson is aware of that, and he spoke about it on yesterday’s press conference.
“They’ve really evolved in a big, big way. Their defense is compatible with lights-out defense across the board, and they’ve got great pass rushers.” the former MVP stated, and emphasized the contribution of DeMarcus Lawrence whose games this season are superb.
“Lawrence is special off the edge, he really knows how to get to the quarterback.”
Cowboys defense is the second-best in the league when blitzing the rival’s quarterback. That is something which might threaten Wilson, who will have to be prepared to use all of his scrambling knowledge in order to be successful in Arlington.
However, they tend to have some problems when allowing the opponents 100+yards from running. That happened six times this season, and in all of them, Dallas lost. In this game, they will take on the best running team in the league who posted 2560 yards in total, or 160 per game. They might not be that efficient, with only 15 TD’s but for sure, it is an effective way to set the tempo and the pace of the game in their favor, especially when having a lead.
The Seahawks defense is very good too, and Jason Garrett knows that.
“I just think they are a really good team on defense, they got really good defensive linemen, they got really good linebackers, who’ve been around this league for a long time, continuing to play at a very high level.”
Many of the people doubted in Seahawks, especially in their defense, who was supposed to be a part of the team in rebuilding. However, it appears that they evolved much faster than anyone thought. The quality of their performances in the last several games of the regular part of the season rose to a very high level, making the franchise from Seattle once again know for its defending.
The guy who will taste their strength is Dak Prescott. After his rookie year when he felt the atmosphere in the playoffs, Dallas’ quarterback is again in the situation to lead his team in the offseason, and according to his words, the games in January are the ones which define the player, particularly in his position.
“Quarterback’s success is depending on what they do in the playoffs. I think that’s where the checks get written and they make their money. To be honest our job is to win, no matter what happens, no matter how you play individually, at the end of the day is to get the job done.” Prescott said on Wednesday’s press conference.
After a bad previous season, the 25-year old QB, started to establish the trust in his and his decisions from ground zero, and so far, he’s been doing a solid job. He threw for 3,885 yards and 22 touchdowns with 8 interceptions. However he did have 12 fumbles, but still, that is his style of play, with lots of scrambling and sometimes running. It is why he had 6 rushing touchdowns.
The experience is on Seattle’s side, but the crowd will be behind the hosts. The former Super Bowl team will clash with the team who strives to get there. Chances for success are 50-50.
One thing is for sure, this is not the game to be missed.
