The series of articles in which we present the NFL divisions for the upcoming season will start with the AFC South. Here we have the Indianapolis Colts and the Tennessee Titans standing above the Jaguars and the Texans, who are the contenders for the last place in the AFC conference.
Indianapolis Colts
Head coach Frank Reich lost a couple of players this summer, among which CB Xavier Woods and WR TY Hilton present the biggest blow. On the other side, veteran QB, Matt Ryan came to replace Carson Wentz, which is a jackpot from our point of view.
Along with the former MVP, the Colts got massive boosts on the defensive side, landing CB Stephin Gilmore and DE Yannick Ngakoue, who have to push hard to bounce back to their previous levels play, and the Colts just might be the place for them. QB Nick Foles is here as well, so the franchise from Indianapolis has every right to hope to win the division.
Tennessee Titans
Everything revolves around Derrick Henry here. With AJ Brown and Julio Jones out, the Titans will use Henry even more than before. Though, he could receive some help from a first-round pick, WR Treylon Burks, and the veteran Robert Woods.
To be honest, the biggest problem in Tennessee is Ryan Tannehill, who isn’t an elite QB. You can’t count on him to solve games and lead the team, as he really doesn’t have enough creativity for such a role. Malik Willis, the third-round pick, will be his competition, yet that isn’t enough for the Titans and their dream of reaching the Super Bowl.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jags have a new head coach, Doug Pederson, who won the Super Bowl with the Eagles. Jacksonville added a few new faces to the offensive line wanting to secure enough quality protection for Trevor Lawrence, who didn’t live up to the hype after coming from college as the No.1 pick.
The other No.1 pick, Trevon Walker, puts massive pressure on his shoulders to start contributing immediately. He was dominant in college, but we’ll see how he adapts to the big league.
The Jaguars have a lot of talent, and we believe that Pederson is the best possible choice to filter this team and leave those who can contribute and push the Jags to a better tomorrow.
Houston Texans
This is the lost franchise, and even though they have a certain talent, the negative atmosphere and the image created in public are too toxic for the Texans. Young QB, Davis Mills, looks promising, yet as said, not only does he have to battle with the rivals on the field, but the negative reputation of the franchise as well.
His development is linked with a very good connection with the WR Brandin Cooks, and the two have an excellent partnership on the field.
A potential big plus for the Texans is their rookies in the secondary, CB Derek Stingley Jr. and S Jalent Pitre. These two guys could be a force that emerges in the division and the conference.
