Kelce Lifts the Chiefs, KC Better Than the Chargers, 34-28 OT

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the LA Chargers after overtimes last night, posting one of the most important triumphs of the year. The final result of the clash was 34-28 for the guests from KC, after a wild contest that saw one hell of a battle.

Travis Kelce’s touchdown with 8:45 to go in the OT decided the event. The fantastic TE caught Patrick Mahomes’s pass at a 30-yard line and avoided all of the Chargers defenders before entering the end zone. This was one of the typical scores for the Chiefs’ No.87, who was the best player in KC.

Kelce caught 191 yards on 10 receptions, the longest 69 yards, with two touchdowns, one of them with 1:16 left in the regulations. Throughout the entire event, he moved the chains and presented a constant threat for the LAC defense.

“Everybody is talking about him losing a step, he looked fast to me,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “His endurance down the stretch for an elder statesman — he’s not over the hill — his acceleration is something.”

Patrick Mahomes racked up 410 yards, his season-high, adding three touchdown tosses and one interception, all that while completing 31 of 47 passing attempts. Mahomes also ran for 32 yards.

Tyreek Hill had 12 receptions for 148 yards and one TD and was also very good. Apart from him and Kelce, there weren’t any other players with more than 22 receiving yards. The Chiefs ran for 86 yards, providing one touchdown on the ground, through Michael Burton, who had a sole rush for seven yards, carrying the football into the end zone.

Last night’s game was the biggest test for the Chiefs so far, and may we say they passed it. It was also the most difficult task for the Chargers too, and they didn’t disappoint as well.

Justin Herbert and his pack fought until the very end, going toe to toe with one of the biggest Super Bowl contenders. The young QB had 236 passing yards for two TDs and one pick. One touchdown toss ended up in Keenan Allen’s arms and the second in Jalen Guyton’s.

The Chargers had 192 rushing yards, delivering two scores on the ground. Austin Ekeler, who ran 59 yards, had one score, and Herbert the other. Justin Jackson had a team-high 86 running yards.

“I really liked the way we managed the entire game tonight. It didn’t go down for us today, but we gave ourselves an opportunity. We just didn’t finish the game off defensively,” said head coach Brandon Staley.

The Chargers are 8-6 now, and if they won this event, Staley’s boys would take over the top spot in the AFC West from the Chiefs. LAC defeated the AFC champions earlier this year at the Arrowhead Stadium, which would mean that the tiebreaker could have been on their side.

Up next, they visit the sorry Houston Texans and, after that, finish the regular part of the campaign against two division rivals, the Denver Broncos at home and the Las Vegas Raiders on the road.

On the other side, the 10-4 Chiefs await the Pittsburgh Steelers at home, the head for Cincinnati to meet the Bengals and eventually face the Broncos at Mile High on December 9 to wrap up the regular part of the season. After a poor start, they bounced back, posting seven wins in a row, and now hold the top spot in the conference with one triumph more than the closest rivals.
